    Poll: Wood Strip Material Choice

I've worked with quite a few different woods, but hands down prefer our local white cedar. I am going to get some poplar or aspen this fall though and try that as the main wood.

Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

There's always surprises in groups, for instance, surprise Bannock, layered with the surprise mexican jalapeño peppers, the ones the won the hottest peppers in Mexico contest, and the ones that subsequently turned my rosebud into a surprise ring of burning fire, the likes of which had never...

Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

Having organized group meals for extended trips for over 30 years, I don't care to ever do it again. I'm quite happy sharing a fire or using one of my little stoves to make my five minute meal.

    Back in the Coho..... Finally.

Glad to hear you are getting back into the pole of things. I'm hoping to do a real trip this summer too, first in a few years.

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

That's a good plan, but you have forgotten the most important Apocalypse belief......Zombies can't survive the extreme cold, even mild temperatures will slow them down enough double tap them with ease. South America will be knee deep in Zombies.

    Paddling in an Apocalypse

I grew up on Canadian air force bases, my Dad was a radar technician. Nuclear war was a daily reality for us. Because we were the base for the Argus, and then the Aurora, both submarine hunting planes, we were told that we would be included in the first strike of nuclear bombs. The air...

    Getting Kids into Canoeing

I spent 30 years taking high school kids on extended wilderness trips. Our focus was a little different from much of what is being discussed. This might sound somewhat pretentious, my apologies. We were all about trying to get the group to gel into one cohesive unit, where everyone came together...

    Help to identify canoe?

Some of those old fiberglass chopper 3 keeled canoes are tough as heck. I have seen them still going strong with well over 50 years of use.

Forgot to mention, inn a less charitable tone, whoever designed the bed rails on the 2024 Ranger needs a kick in the Gonads. Many customers have complained, and Ford has done doodley squat to remedy the situation. I have complained to two different dealers and the head office twice, with nothing...

There were two bolt holes through the actual metal bed rail in the plastic bedrail pockets. Drilled holes through the HDPE to match the bolt holes, then drilled matching holes through the 2x4 so they all lined up. 5/16 bolts hold it all together. The 20 foot canoe was an extended version of...

The 2024 Ford Ranger has decorative bed rails. Didn't realize this till after I bought it. Basically the bed rail is about 1 inch high, made out of ribbed plastic that won't support anything. There are three pockets on each side with removable caps, so after some internet sleuthing, I ordered...

    Photo of the day

So your start date was May 22nd? The ice on our lake didn't even leave until about May 15, you must have had some frosty days!

Edison Film: Canoeing on the Charles River in 1904

There is a lot of truth to that....I have taken a lot of gals on canoe trips, and although I haven't ditched the canoe with any of them in it, the extended trip itself is a good barometer of how they will hold up. If you can spend a week or more on a trip with a lady who really enjoys being out...

Edison Film: Canoeing on the Charles River in 1904

Although fashion is conceptual and time stamped, the importance of duds could be seen as a percentage of relative salary. Some quick googling has revealed to me that in 1900, the average wage in the United States was $10 a week. Poking through a Macy's catalogue from the same era brought me to...

Misc Ramblings From the 'ole Miss(inaibi)

Had another massive rain storm last night, they are moving across Northern Ontario like bad magical carpets. Probably another couple of inches last night. Around 3 years ago, one of my firefighter buddies told me he never thought the water table would return to normal, it was so low from years...

Misc Ramblings From the 'ole Miss(inaibi)

Had over a 100 mm (roughly 4 inches) of rain again yesterday. More falling now, nig thunder storms. It's a weird Sumner, seem to be breaking records.

A Week of Canoe Adventures: Western Pennsylvania Solo Canoe Rendezvous, Algonquin, and the Canadian Canoe Museum

Very nice report! I have to get to the canoe museum, maybe this summer. Interesting sign for the museum, the first title in Anishinaabemowin, Jimaan Kinomaagewin, roughly translates as canoe teacher, or canoe teachings. Did any of the solo canoes you tried out want to come home with you?

A La Mer du Nord 2025

Pretty hard to shoot if the gun is lashed in lol. One would have to work very hard to tip a Tremblay, they were designed to be able to dance in.

A La Mer du Nord 2025

Wish I could be there with my Tremblay. Only thing I changed on it was to make a carrying yoke, plus i took out the thwart behind the bow seat so I could solo it. It's a very nice canoe, floats along like a cork.
