    Hornbeck Guideboat?

That may be true in gneral, but I believe in most races I have seen, such as the Adirondack 90 miler, the guideboat rules include "Seats must be fixed, no rolling seats are allowed." As opposed to rules for canoes , C4 and voyageur canoes may have gunwale-to-gunwale rolling mid seats to...

    Hornbeck Guideboat?

Again, after actually trying one, i would not recommend the guideboat model made near Charlotte Vermont by Adirondack Guideboat Company. Compared to my cedarstrip guideboat whose image I posted above, theirs seemed heavy and very unresponsive. I use mine as a fishing platform, often with the...

    Wildfire Smoke

I remember well the derecho "microburst" of July15, 1995, on a Friday night. It was a 100+ mph straight line wind that blew through the Adirondacks NW to SE. Millions of trees were toppled. Dozens of campers were trapped, some were extracted by chopper. Six people lost their lives. Would have...

Videos: Canadian Style and Freestyle Paddling in Wood Canoes

On day1 of BSA adult trek leader wilderness guide training (typically college age), I would gauge overall canoe skills by observing the student launch and get in a BSA Grumman canoe, then paddle out 50 yards to a couple of buoys and make a turn around one while paddling on opposite side of the...

Videos: Canadian Style and Freestyle Paddling in Wood Canoes

"ONE" of the most important things, IMO, that Sue said was "Canoeing isn’t just big chunks of strokes, it’s little ones you are doing all the time. As you become more practiced, you don’t even think about it." I have always felt that the successful canoer has well practiced access to a number...

    Wildfire Smoke

I could smell smoke in bed this morning at my location in the SW Adirondacks. Then paddled the lake, but no real haze noted in the distance.

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

The mantra is " Clean, Drain, Dry" From NYSDEC: https://dec.ny.gov/nature/animals-fish-plants/invasive-species/aquatic/prevent-spread-of-aquatic-invasive-species/clean-drain-dry "Boating in the Adirondacks? Special Notice for Boaters in the Adirondack Park and Within Ten Miles of the Blue...

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

The 6 year old water heater at my camp tops out at 140. The designated boat wash stations have a setting of 120 or 140, setable by the operator. The one near me gets its hot water from a former school kitchen water heater.

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

That's why they also offer the option of 120F water. 140F is what they use on trailers, and on motors themselves or on large heavy motorboat hulls at the owner's discretion. I sat in on a local training session and demo just to see what it was about.

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

i was told that naturally dry (completely really dry) for two full weeks is necessary.

    Invasive species carried on canoes?

NYS does have strict rules about mandatory inspection of boats going from one watershed to another. Mainly primarily directed to motorboat craft. Baitwells and trailers tend to collect bits of aquatic vegetation, and it only takes a tiny fragment of some to spread to an entirely new region of...

    Cheap stove alternative.

Amazon offered one of those to me unsolicited a few years ago, long before I heard of Temu. It came packaged directly from China in a few weeks, only cost about $3 at the time. It folds into a very tiny package in its orange cheap plastic container.. I thought it worked pretty good, the piezo...

    Wildfire Smoke

A few years ago, while racing the Yukon 1000, the area had many fires. We even saw one just as it was created by a lightning strike on a mountain side in the middle of the "night". Shortly after we entered Alaska, we were not far from a pyro-cumulous cloud, where a large fire created its own...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

May I ask why you did not like the Shadow? I had wanted one for several years, because on the 90 mile race it wipes all of the previously sold RapidfFire and similar solo canoes. But I was turned off because while I always see Joe winning his race class on the 90 mile canoe race (now with his...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

I think you will like the RapidFire veruy much. It is faster and more stable with an easy single blade paddle stroke than you may expect, not quite as light weight (by only a couple of pounds) or as fast (by only a couple of tenths mph) than the less stable narrower PB Shadow and has just...

Brown Tract Portage to Lower Locks

It is along a paved road through the campground. So a race run by physically carrying a canoe, or with wheels goes fast. Less than half way through Day1 of the 90 miler, while you are relatively fresh with cheering fans along the way as you pass by. Look at the map. it is indeed 0.91 mile. Takes...

Brown Tract Portage to Lower Locks

Some campers like to dally in camp and move slowly. I know that young first time boy scouts with no canoeing experience (one day intro) would commonly take this route, beginning at 8th Lake as a five day paddle/camping trek Monday pm to Friday AM. So I have no doubt that a reasonably...

Lows Lake and Bog River Flow ADKs May 2025

I had not heard about the PCBs. At one time there was a leftover large building near the entrance of the gated road by the upper dam that was scheduled to be removed until it was discovered that it was full of asbestos paneling and siding. I remember seeing it on the way to the BSA camp. That...

Brown Tract Portage to Lower Locks

On paper that is technically correct. i tried breaking the portage to LL like that once. And only once. And I was not even in any 20 hour Cannonball hurry at the time, just on a leisurely week long camping trip to Plattsburgh with a Hornbeck before the NFCT even formally existed. I hated it and...

Lows Lake and Bog River Flow ADKs May 2025

The pond beyond the beaver dam east of Site #8 are the wood and steel circular structures called cistern wells. Did you notice how clear and pure the water looks in there? A. A. Low was ahead if his time. He sold bottled water from them to cities downstate from "Adirondack Mt’s Virgin Forest...
