The Psychology of Choosing the "Perfect" Canoe

Incredibly true. I have been fortunate (or foolish) enough to have a few dozen canoes pass through my garages over the decades and am finally pared down to one that is “good enough” to satisfy my disparate desires. Possibly that’s due to the mellowing of age and the infrequency of paddling these...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

A second for the Wildfire (mine's a Bell)...about as good an all around composite as a WC Prospector would be for the traditional genre. Like symmetrical hulls and a fair amount of rocker.

    Bell FlashFire

Not an expert but very familiar with the Fire series….not sure those gunnels are factory…fasteners don’t look right on the thwarts.

Video: Tom MacKenzie builds rib/plank/Ceconite canoe

Bent ribs with him one day—(think it was while a bunch of us were at his place shooting the FS instructional video). To someone not experienced in such matters it seemed like magic. One of my biggest lifelong regrets is having sold the Mistral he made for me and the Button he made for my better...

The best solo canoe may be a touring kayak.

To each his own....own trip, own hull, own paddle, own reason for choice of all. My choice and 2¢...canoe.

Recommendations for River Touring Canoe Courses?

Took 3 days private instruction at NOC many years ago and it was top notch…from all I have heard it’s only gotten better. If Riversport is still active on the Yough that would be a good option also. Used to hang out there…but again, many moons ago.
