What do you use for a table?

Strippers can be surprisingly useful This site (Steel River between logjams) was especially nice because the elevation change on the sand spit gave me a higher work surface.

Leaving for the still "frozen" North, Riviere Megiscane

Helluva train ride to start the trip.

1981 Mike Galt Essay: "The Solo Path"

I've tried to find his obituary with the wayback machine but the search was fruitless (which is, in itself, sad). I suspect the he was a writer and, while he would, ideally, write about his true passions, the reality of writing for a magazine may be that you write what you are asked to write.

    Strip Glue Review

nice bottles, I'll have to grab some. Interesting that they're intended for tie dye... can I hook you up with some gel stain for your next build? ;)

    An extra trippy Merlin.

Got sidetracked a little coming up with transportation options but I've been picking away at the build here & there. I "sanded" the inside with the surform shaver and then went over it again with an orbital sander and 60 grit. It made a pile of sawdust (which I saved for later use) and it...

    Strip Glue Review

I used Gorilla wood glue on my first two and Titebond II for the tie dye build. I liked the Gorilla glue better as it seemed to set a little faster. I haven't tried Elmers (yet).

Tour owner jailed for 10.5 years for weir drowning deaths of 4 customers

That's a shame but near-death experiences can certainly have that effect and there's not many places that you realize the power of water like getting caught in a hydraulic. At the same time, I can't help looking at dams and waterfalls and seeing if I can find a good line. "Niagara Falls...

Canoe odyssey just begun from NW-most to SE-most points in USA

Certainly not my preference of boat either but at least his logo suggests he uses canoe paddles. Personally, I'm more curious about the route: The write-up says he's paddling the Ohio & Tennessee Rivers. So he's paddling up the Tennessee and then portaging another Continental Divide to get...

    Wannigan/cooler project

Very nice and the All Day IPA in the cupholder looks like it fits right in (assuming they haven't changed their label).

Looking for river trips in OH/PA vicinity

Over the years, I've gathered quite a bit of info on that trip. The river is very much dependent upon rainfall and the trick, it seems, is to catch it at the right water level. Under 4 feet and you'll be dragging the riffles and over 6 ft it starts to clear the banks in places. I'm still...

New to me Portage Pal trailer

I like it! (Then again, I'm a huge fan of function 1st and cosmetics never.)

    Balancing weight and durability

Personally, I'm notoriously frugal (one reason I build my own) but, when money must be spent, I've learned that you'll remember the value of a purchase long after the price you paid is forgotten so don't be afraid to buy once, cry once. Swift has the reputation of being straight up so I'd...

Looking for river trips in OH/PA vicinity

Frenchville to Keating is a cool paddle and about as remote as you'll find paddling a PA river. It's also (probably) the most paddled section of the West Branch which is pretty awesome considering that (especially now that McCracken's Canoe Rental closed) it doesn't see much traffic.

Looking for river trips in OH/PA vicinity

General rule of thumb in PA is to simply avoid launches that are maintained by the state. Registration / permits are only required in state parks and launches maintained by Fish & Boat. Launch from any town park, bridge abutment or roadside pull-off and you need nothing. (OK, you're still...

Greetings from NW Chicago Metro Suburbia

Welcome. I can't imagine that you could go wrong with a location near woods and water. My retirement plan is to wear out as much gear as possible.

    Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

Having never built with stems, I'm curious how you would add the length if you decide you've cut them too short. Aren't they the first thing that goes onto the forms? 5/8 x 1/4 strips? That's almost square! Definitely sexy and I like seeing the knots... Should look very cool when done.

Personal hygiene on extended trips (The Deodorant Debate)

For anything outdoors and, especially for odor control, you simply cannot beat merino wool clothing and a good smoke bath. (I'm in the "deodorant is for the weak" category)

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

I'm still curious about this one: It spans the Northern outlet of Summit Lake on the Marshall Lake loop and goes the whole way across the outlet. Looks like the base of an old splash dam but the surrounding terrain wouldn't lend itself well to flooding to float logs. I'm wondering if it was...

    What's out West?

Really? Interesting... So I can travel & camp like I'm one of the boys shortly after Kenora? Now the only issue is that I've found a few places to check out along highway 2 and 2 hikes I'd like to take in Utah. I can't do all 3 routes... (I need to retire) Crossing the Rockies in Canada and...

    What's out West?

I guess I hadn't thought it through that far yet. Typically, whether I'm hiking or canoeing, I prefer loops so that I can solo unsupported. I'm not opposed to shuttles but I'd prefer to avoid crowds if possible. If I leave here the morning of Aug 30th, I should have about 4 days free on the...
