Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

As a foreigner in the USA / Canada, I never think of taking a gun with me on my wilderness trips. I don't take a gun with me when I travel where I live. (I don't want to start a discussion about guns versus bear spray!) I carry bear spray in the bush. I share the fear of homo sapiens sapiens...

Paddling you've done outside of the USA and Canada

Yellowcanoe Oh yes. I was able to paddle in Northern Ontario several times. I love the boreal forest of the Canadian Shield! On the occasion of a long trip through the USA and Canada, I was able to dip a paddle in the waters of Georgia, Florida, British Columbia, North Western Territories and...

Paddling you've done outside of the USA and Canada

Since I live in Europe.... of course I paddled outside of the USA or Canada.... Switzerland France Italy couldn't find pictures from Spain, Germany, Austria. In 1987 I had the chance to paddle in Eastern Germany (GDR) in "Spreewald". On our journey back home our camera was...

    Preferred tripping style ?

Mostly solo. At work I have to use (and improve) my "interpersonal" skills every day. That's why I enjoy solotripping. Years ago my preferred tripping partner quit paddling due to health issues. I never found anybody to "replace" him. Sometimes my daughter joins me, but she has a lot of other...

Dedicated screen shelter for cooking and relaxing

Took a Eureka VCS tarp with bugscreen on a family trip in NW-Ontario. It was the first wilderness canoeing experience for my partner and our daughter, that was the reason we brought it. The bugs were abundand, the weather pretty wet, the shelter provided comfort. We had to spend one night under...

Poll: What do you sleep on mostly when canoe camping?

Air pad with some kind of layer inside. I'd say the synmat is an air mattress, the dlx9 is down filled, as far as I know.

Poll: What do you sleep on mostly when canoe camping?

Exped SynMat 3-D ist the one I use most of the time. It's kind of a hybrid air matress with Texpedloft as isolating layer. R-value 4.8. All Exped mats come with a snozzel bag -> you don't have to use your lungs to blow it up, very handy.

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

Yes we do have that. If you have to be airlifted out by helicopter and you are donater/member of "rega" (Swiss Air-Rescue) for example, you'll get an invoice but they don't force you to pay it. That doesn't change the fact that you are responsible for the cost of a rescue. I agree that a lot of...

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

It's probably hard to compare, but here in Switzerland everyone who needs to be rescued receives an invoice. It doesn't matter how well prepared he was, or whether he got into an emergency out of his own fault. The rescued person is responsible for the cost of a rescue. So far I've always...

    Worst Camp Meals?

It seems that most people eat well on their canoe trips. Otherwise this thread would be longer. Usually I eat well on trips but there's this one memorable meal. It happened on the Albany River in Ontario. We were running low on food and there were still 3 - 5 days to paddle until the...

I think it's time to say hello, finally

Hello stripperguy, Interesting questions! Public land? Oh this is very complex; there's a law that says that all wooded areas in Switzerland are accessible to everyone regardless of who owns them. I made my camp on land that's owned by a company (gravel plant), it's a wooded area, but it's also...
