Why are wood canvas canoes so nice to paddle

Al your Seliga according to Northstar is an old design and is less efficient then most hulls with similar design specifications. Canoes designs have advanced significantly in design in the last 30 years let alone the last 100. This progression is especially true for solo canoes. There is an...

Why are wood canvas canoes so nice to paddle

I have never paddled a W/C canoe but have admired and coveted their beauty. I dread the noise of my carbon canoe with aluminum gunnels. Kevlar canoes are much quieter then my carbon but I dream of wood canvas for its tendency to be quiet. I admit I am more sensitive to sound then most. I...

Yet another reason canoes are better than kayaks and SUPs

Chip I think this sounds like a challenge as much as an offer.

    homebuilt aluminum kayak

I thought the only benefit to aluminum canoes or kayaks are storing outside and recyclable. They are nice when you want to fish and don't have an anchor. Just pull up to any rock and they seem to stick like glue. Three cheers for the DIY.

    Poling Fun on the Potomac

The view isn't quite as good but I started carrying ski poles on some of my regular paddles when the water gets low. I have a couple sections that get really bony going up stream. I find two ski poles with baskets removed is a more efficient way up stream and kinder to my paddles. If too...

Largest Lakes, Greatest Depths, and Other Watery Data

Just a T-shirt! Lake Vostok is almost 2.5 miles under ice. I'll buy ya an excellent dinner and drinks if you can complete that list. Even if you had to skip Lake Vostok. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron is more like two basins on one lake in my mind.

    Convince me

How do you think most other fifteen foot 36 inch wide tandems feel to paddle from the center compared to your raven? You will regret it. But I think Alan might be on to something with the square stern Pal. Stretched out 18 foot long 31 or 32 inches wide, square stern. You might have to change...

    Repairing a royalex hull?

Honestly I have no connection to West Systems besides happy customer. Pblanc I assumed the outer compromised areas would be cleaned, sanded, cleaned with alcohol and carefully flamed treated. (See description in above article about flame treating if unsure.) Followed shortly by coating in...

Paddling Deaths Remained High in 2021

Off course all preventable deaths are are not good but 160 seems pretty low. Especially considering what percentage of people paddling who appear clueless, unprepared and drinking. Floating might be better description then paddling.

The answer to up creek no paddle

No need to bring that extra paddle. Gunnel bobbing is surprisingly effective yielding about 2 miles an hour if you can keep it going that long. https://phys.org/news/2022-08-creek-gunwale-bobbing.html

    Paddling in a lightning storm

PacketFlend I think I understand what your saying. Are you mostly thinking about small catamarans and monohulls like for racing etc? The article is covering larger 25-60 foot range of sailboats. I could not for the life of me understand why you would think of catamarans going out in worse...

    Paddling in a lightning storm

PacketFlend I think there would be many a old salty captains that would disagree with you. There are more monohull sailboats sailing the worlds oceans then catamarans. I do not know but my guess was that catamarans build up more static charge with the two hulls. In regards to the lighting...

How to unjam a stuck double blade paddle?

I had this problem with a couple of my kayak paddles. I cleaned them many times and was unable to determined what exactly catches. I dripped some canola cooking oil around the button area and worked the button to spread the oil. It worked great after that.
