Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

Below Wilder dam can be pretty bony, depending on flow rates. Above Wilder dam is effectively a lake. Flow rates at Wilder are here: http://www.h2oline.com/srcs/505121.html. Currently at 5k, which means scraping over shoals or hopping out of the boat at multiple locations downstream. I...

    Winter pants

I did pipeline construction one winter in Wyoming many years ago, and the coveralls were all the rage. Definitely an outdoor activity though.

Looking back on 2024 and what’s ahead for 2025

In addition to a bunch of day paddles I did a few overnights from the house to one of the campsites on the Connecticut, and really enjoyed it. Plan to do them more frequently this coming season. Also planning a trip down to the MA line -- 4 or 5 nights. May do it solo or, if I make the effort...

    Winter pants

This sounds like Carhartt thermal coverall territory. https://www.carhartt.com/product/104464/yukon-extremes-insulated-coverall---4-extreme-warmth-rating On a semi-related note, I've been looking at reviews of wool mesh baselayers. Not so much for winter, but for shoulder season. Like so...

    3 to 5 miles maybe? ;)

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

BB Arrow probably. I have one. Since I almost exclusively j-stroke for corrections, it works fine. If I want to get fancy I'll use a different paddle, but a standard j covers a lot of ground. And I could goon stroke I suppose.

My 5th "Final Canoe": A Swift Carbon Fusion Keewaydin 15, at 80

Any vehicle that runs and has a roof rack is a good canoe vehicle I think, but a Mercedes kinda fits with a Swift.

    Winter pants

Second shell pants, especially if you're mostly having trouble on windy days. Rain pants would serve the same purpose. A lot of AT thru hikers like Frogg Toggs. Cheap, but they work. https://www.froggtoggs.com/frogg-toggs-All-Sport-Rain-Suit-LONG

New Swift Tandem - Lavieille 17-6

Not much to add except that Wenonah Spirit IIs could be had with a third seat at one point. Early 2000s I think. I always figured it was for family/kid use.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Several up to 260 cm here in Aquabound's low angle paddle collection: https://aquabound.com/collections/low-angle

What do you think about the idea of having vendor forums?

No opinion here. Not sure I see a value, but willing to learn if necessary.

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

That is the same system as on the Wilderness. Never had it self adjust, but it sometimes doesn't want to adjust and it is a bit noisy sometimes.

What height boots do you prefer?

12" boots for water (which I don't currently own-- trying some NRS boundary boots which are even taller), 10" boots for snow (Thinsulate insulated Bean boots). I've got some 8" Maine hunting shoes from LLBean, and they just seem a little low for the water. Fine 95% of the time, but one slip...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

I have one of these on order for paddling below my local dam where the river gets pretty sparse. Should arrive in February.

Most of them are pretty beat and sun damaged, but there's a nice OT Camper and a nice MR Exporer stored there. Both tempting.

    Photo of the day

100 ft from the road. 100 yds from my house. Two summers ago one of the boats got left in the water, tied to shore, for about two weeks. Then it drifted down below the first bend and got caught in some reeds. Then someone pulled in up on shore a quarter mile down from the put in and left it...

The local put in. It is conserved land, but during the pandemic folks just started leaving their boats there so the conservancy had to put in a rack. These rarely if ever actually get put in the water, and actually block access.
