    Too cold to paint, so...

Too cold to paint my w/c project, so I'll make the first paddle with the new (1952 vintage- same as me) bandsaw added to the shop. I'm making a curly Maple, single board paddle. My own grip and blade design. I usually use another paddle as a starting point and then alter to suit my curiosity...

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

Yes, I am hoping to be on Fish Pond in the St. Regis Canoe Area, ADKs, NY on the 8th. I generally prefer to be there on weekdays only in order to avoid crowds, but in this case I will likely enter the area on Saturday in order to be in place by the Monday event. Judging by the included website...

"Drag-ability" of hull material over rocks in river beds and on portages

I gotta chime in here. I only dragged it once ( I swear- only once), in desperation, and only on boggy and soft terrain- not a rock in sight. Not on a portage. Just to escape the bog of upper Harrington Brook between Lake Lila and Clear Pond (Whitney Wilderness, ADKs) when I navigated poorly...

2/19-21/24 Big Pond Catskills NY (+ hearing aid discussion)

Oticon More 1. They are rechargeable, and the charger stores power for several charges even when not plugged in. I wear an older battery powered pair when paddling over several days.... it's hard to find a charging receptacle out in the woods! I do want to hear the owls... and bears (oh my!)...

2/19-21/24 Big Pond Catskills NY (+ hearing aid discussion)

I will second this. My son is an audiologist, and he helped me get hearing aids which not only help with generally improved hearing, but also link to my smartphone so phone conversations which were difficult are now much improved because the phone conversation comes directly in through the...

One thing I will never do again is . . .

Harrison Brook area: Lake Lila is off the map to the bottom, my erroneous path to and through Harrison Brook bog is in red, turnoff on Rainer Creek to the proper carry landing is in green, the actual carry along the railway right of way and through woods to Clear Pond is in yellow. Clear Pond...

One thing I will never do again is . . .

Pictures don't really do it justice... but here are a few. The pleasant paddle up Harrison Brook prior to the drag. In the thick of the bog. Some of the channels were quite narrow, but waist deep! (sorry about the vertically oriented photo showing as horizontal here): Typical channel; too...

One thing I will never do again is . . .

Haha! I will never again drag my canoe through the seemingly endless bog of upper Harrington Brook because I missed the turn onto Rainer Creek between Lake Lila and Clear Pond; Whitney Wilderness, ADKs.

    New project... 17.5' Atkinson Traveler

I'm going for the marathon length build record on this one... Actually, I got focused on really diving into the restoration of the early Chestnut Bobs Special. I did finish all the repairs and got her into canvas in mid-October 2023 and will prime, paint, and complete that canoe when weather...

    Lows Lower Dam Access

Bill, I have the notion that the Horseshoe outlet stream would be mostly navigable under normal water levels, but my understanding is that the level has been lowered while construction is ongoing at the lower dam. If one can believe the Google Earth measuring feature, the narrowest channels of...

    Lows Lower Dam Access

Thank you. I located this today from Adirondack Explorer: bog-river-access-road-closed Here's the relevant part: The state Department of Environmental Conservation is offering alternative access points to the Bog River. One is the Horseshoe Lake outlet, which is accessible .4 miles past the...

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

Oops, egg on my face! Still, odd place to find it. The nearest road is a kilometer away by my guess. Or one hell of a discus toss from the Adirondack Railway about a hundred meters away…

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

Logging era machine part found while bushwhacking north of Harrington Pond/Brook, north of Rainer Creek, having missed the turnoff for the carry to Clear Pond from Lake Lila, Adirondacks. Presumably, this boggy area was at one time flooded so logs could be floated to Lake Lila. I imagine this...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Oops, windy day today; tail end of the recent storm I guess. Rain softened soil and gusty winds today brought this down. It's a Spruce of some variety, with lots of Ivy climbing the tree as well. Maybe I can salvage some w/c canoe parts from it!! Gotta look on the bright side!

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Wind from the south (rare for us) caused a live 80' White Pine on the edge of our property to fall on our neighbor's home. Apparently punched holes in their roof from the branches since only the top 20' of the tree hit the roof. I offered to clean the bulk of the branches off the home during...
