Smoke headed your way for tomorrow?

Worst day yet here close to the NY border.

    Wildfires in Canada!

Yellow sky and stinky - just north of the border from Malone. I've been enjoying the cool nights with my bedroom windows open, but this morning I woke up with a sore throat.

    Maine Moose Hunting Guide

There are (at least) 2 types in QC (and I suspect elsewhere), although I'm not sure if they are scientifically recognized as a distinct variety. One is the typical, palmated antler style. The other - what the French call an "elan" - is a very sturdy-bodied animal, usually darker in colour, and...

    Maine Moose Hunting Guide

The BRNO 602, scoped, weighed close to 12lbs. This makes the recoil a lot less "snappy" and much more "pushy." Quite pleasant to shoot - you know you're sending some power downrange but without the snot-bubbling smack of a 3 1/2" 12 gauge turkey load.

    Maine Moose Hunting Guide

In Quebec you can't hunt them with anything smaller than a 6mm/243. I wouldn't want to. I'd hazard that 30-06 and 308 Win are the most popular cartridges around here. My uncle - a real man's man, outdoorsy, hunter/artist shot nothing but a 270 Win out of his Remington 760. A legendary shot, he...

Your "field bag" is what I would call a haversack. I will be making one very soon to hold chainsaw/logging tools - spare chain, wedges, log hooks, etc. I love making bags - it's kind of an obsession.

Spring 2023 weather where you are?

Similar to the Connecticut situation here, but lots of rain which, with the snow melt, is causing havoc up north. I have a 4-day trip scheduled and currently, the road to get there is closed because of severe erosion. This is my own, back yard weather station: http://littledoorfarm.com

Coffee grinders and brewers for both home and camp?

Pickles taste good. Strawberries taste good. What about strawberries that taste like pickles? It's not about taste, it's about association. I'd wager that if we stopped calling instant coffee "coffee," less people would be put off. Granted, it is not my favourite hot beverage, but the...

Poll: What is Your Opinion of Tilley Hats

I have one, but full brim = no hood - not so great with a bug jacket. I also find it too floppy in the wind. Ball cap and tube scarf for me.

A Stripper and a Composite Copy

My results with hot water were different: But to be fair, it raised the grain so much that I had to sand. It was just a quick wipe, though.

Canoeing, Tripping, Camping with Heart Problems

A Stripper and a Composite Copy

Of my 407 hobbies/pastimes/interests, the end product of a stripper build seems like cheating - a loophole in the effort-to-beauty/practicality equation. I am not saying it doesn't take effort - sanding the interior blows. But paddling your practical work of art for the first time wipes that...

    Raven, part 2

It's hard to stay motivated at this stage (at least for me). I use the form marks as my goal - "just 2 sections tonight..." I save the stern/bow, manual sanding jobs for times of self-loathing. April sounds about right.

    10 Scary Rescue Videos

Not to make light, but I instantly thought that it's similar to welding when a spark lands in your boot and you have a very brief moment when you must decide if the spark will simply go out or if you need to launch your footwear across the garage.
