New Spring Clamps for Stripping !!!

I've contemplated something similar to this before! Are those the 99 cent spring clamps from the depot? 2" opening size? i am thinking I will probably try a staple less build for my next stripper and i think these would suit my style quite nicely. I think about 30-40 of these buggers in...

    Steaming staple holes

i read about this technique and thought I would give it a try on my passage solo build. I was skeptical at first, but after a few passes with the iron over the lightly misted holes, the results were amazing to me. Some of the holes completely disappeared, while most, closed up significantly...

    Minicel sanding blocks

here is something that I came up with for sanding the tumblhome area on my current build. Made from a scrap chunk of 2x4, a 1/2" thick piece of exercise floor foam (aka Mike Mccrea's magnificent minicel), and a piece of sand paper. All pieces adhered together with super 77 spray adhesive. i put...

    First build 17' Freedom

Decisions, decisions... If weight is a major concern don't do a fill coat and at least varnish the inside with a few coats as a buffer for minor scratches. It was very surprising during my build, how quickly "she" will put on the pounds as you add more epoxy. I weighed my hull before I glasses...

    Cheap alternative to Blue Barrels

Jim, Love those gamma lids! Wish I would have known that menards sold gamma seal lids before my Labor Day trip, would've saved me a couple bucks! I used two buckets on my trip this year along with a blue barrel purchased on Amazon. I think I kinda like the buckets more than the barrel, I mostly...

    Limited materials, need advice

I totally agree with Brian's post about doing a practice run. I always test my settings whenever I run something with a router. You can do a lot of damage in a hurry if you don't! I am looking forward to reading some more build threads this winter! They help pass the winter months.

First stripper: Tandem with speed and...rocker?

We packed fairly heavy, had almost 600# in the boat. That includes about 360# of human weight. Double portaging of course. I had the cruiser out in some 1 1/2-2' swells on one day, other than that, lots of windy paddling with around a 1' chop. No water over the bow even once! I found the design...

First stripper: Tandem with speed and...rocker?

Zac, I have nowhere near the miles logged in a canoe that most of the other members here do. I just returned from a week in the BW, logged about 45 miles in my cruiser, and portaged it almost 5 miles! I love it! I found it easy to strip, even following the sheer line. Next one I am considering...

    Maiden voyage

Thanks wingnut, I need a little break from my daily grind (daddy daycare). The trip should be good for the soul. I love my kids, but can't wait for school to start for the older 2 boys.

Traditional shop is coming into shape...

Nicely done! I love timber frames structures. Looks like it will be built to stand the test of time. Did you cut all the notch work by hand?

    Maiden voyage

Thanks Mike, The paddles were a lot easier to make than I expected. I did a quick count of the individual pieces of wood, and came up with 21. Kinda blew my mind when I thought about it. Jim. Thanks again for your encouragement and guidance along the way. I'm hoping I will be able to shave...

    Maiden voyage

Mike, On another note if you built paddles, I bet you have the abilities to build a canoe. Do what I did to get started and build one at half or quarter scale. Then put it on display in your shop or wherever. I built my scale model from 3 layers of 6 oz glass using a fabric form method. It was...

    Maiden voyage

No Title Thanks for the kind words! SFM, I have not picked a name yet. Mike, I did make paddles, they however did not make the maiden voyage since the varnish was still very fresh. I used Gil gilpatrick's method to make them, with a slight variation when applying the rope to the edge. His...
