LobsterLake, West Branch Penobscot and Chesuncook Lake, Maine. Four days in June

Great report. I clicked over to ccr to look at it. Those are some big beautiful lakes. Thanks for posting this. I took special note of the clouds denoting a change in the wind ;-)

    Miramichi River, New Brunswick

That looks like a lot of fun! And a beautiful river, too, based on your photos. Thanks for posting those. Can you catch salmon there?

@ Chip It would be a bit sad to meet your maker in a privy! But as they say, "Any shelter in a storm."

5-night standard loop in Algonquin Park

I haven't seen version five yet. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip. I saw Jeff speak at the Kitchener Waterloo Canoe Symposium and it was quite clear that he would never stop improving these maps until they were perfect. His Killarney and Temagami maps look great, too. I bet he'll...

5-night standard loop in Algonquin Park

redoleary It's a Clark Geomatics Algonquin Map. I got it online within the app "PDF Maps" by Avenza, but it is available in some outdoors stores and directly from the maker here: http://www.clarkgeomatics.ca/single-project-algonquin.html I used it in the trip report because of the contrast on...

    Storms

Thanks YC! Looks like I need to start keeping a cloud/weather journal. Should be fun.

What have you lost in a capsize?

smallworks you're right. a lot of the archaeology / material culture of the Canadian Fur Trade was figured out by archaeologists diving at tricky rapids in the French River, where canoes regularly tipped...

    Storms

@ Yellowcanoe, sounds like you know your way around the clouds. Can you recommend a good resource for predicting the weather from the clouds? I've learned the major cloud types but not enough about how they work to really forecast anything.

5-night standard loop in Algonquin Park

Thank you all for your kind comments. re: the beaver The thing that was so funny to me was that he had to climb a serious hill and descend another hill to save not a heck of a lot of swimming. Robin Snapper has a good eye. Those are Ursacks with OPSaks inside, tied up with...

5-night standard loop in Algonquin Park

Hey folks, did a 5 night solo trip in Algonquin Park last week. Pretty standard loop through McIntosh-WhiteTrout-Big Trout-Otterslides-Burnt Island. Generally good weather, a few bugs in places, windy at times enough to keep me in camp for many hours, met a moose or two, met a beaver in my...

    Tripper "Hacks"

1.Those really long rubber coated twist ties are great for tying your paddle to a thwart, when you're portaging. http://www.mec.ca/product/5026-963/n...ber-twist-tie/ 2. Not a hack, just a simplification: One knot to rule them all. Okay, two. You can tie all your tent or tarp lines with a...

What have you lost in a capsize?

I flipped on Burnt Island lake in Algonquin a couple of years ago. Launching very quickly into a headwind, trying hard to make headway, pulling for all I was worth, three paddle strokes from shore, my double blade hit a submerged tree, and my reaction flipped me into the drink. Luckily the...

    nice little overnighter!!

A solo paddler's minimalist first aid kit

For my kit, I just tried to figure out what could go wrong that I could treat myself, as a soloist. There's more, but this is the base... Burns: I bring some "second skin" cool gel pads, and the polysporin with lidocaine in it for superficial burns. Cuts: Steristrips and various bandages for...

    weather radio suggestion?

I already use my InReach device in conjunction with my smartphone to text a message each night to say I'm okay. My wife's reply includes the next day's expected high/low, condition, and wind speed. This is southern Canada, though. Might be hard to find forecasts if I go further afield.

    Bug Time!

That's the first time I've heard of the term "dog fly", but I recognize his ankle biting ways. Folks in southern Ontario call the dog fly "stable fly." I don't recall that it had a name in northern Ontario, when I lived there. I think we just called it a fly cuz it looks like a housefly. Good...

    Bushcraft and canoeing course

Great stuff. I enjoyed reading your posts about tar and shellac on canvas canoes, and your series on canoe paddles. I hope you have a great season with Tjikko. I imagine the ice out is there, or almost...just starting in Southern Ontario, still waiting for central Ontario...[paces the room again]
