    Lows Lake Sept 27/28/29

I've never had wait time or any other issues crossing the border. If I get to the put-in first, look for an old fart snoozing in a hammock.

    Lows Lake Sept 27/28/29

This is looking good. So, Robin, when I get there, you'll probably get there first. I'll just start paddling by the 13 to 17 sites until I see a w/c canoe. Sound about right?

    DIY Rodent-proof Food Bag

Well my medium Grubsack with zipper just arrived and what a nice piece of work. Very well made and should hold enough for a week. Also bought some 1/16 steel cable, put a loop on each end for a caribiner and tying to a tree. Can't wait for a little outing in two weeks. Thanks for the thread...

    DIY Rodent-proof Food Bag

Terrific thread. Thanks everyone. I just ordered a black medium grubpack with zipper. I'm used to using a 20L or 30L barrel but my heart is now working at less than 50% efficiency so weight is a big issue for me. This should allow a nice drop in weight and easier portaging. My wife just...

Lows Lake 4 day solo video

Beautiful. I need to get back there one day. Thanks.

    Best Bug Defence

I gave up on mosquito coils when I found out that they kick out the same amount of formaldehyde as 50+ cigarettes and twice that in particulate matter. So I use DEET as low concentrations work that same as higher but doesn't last as long. I use Permethrin sprays on my pants from the knee down...

Adirondack ice out Hot Tent Gathering

Nothing to be sorry about good buddy? Whatever it is, you have a big cheering section with this community. At my age, I know that recuperating can take a bit of time so take it easy. Canoeing season isn't too far away. Perhaps later in the year we can pick a route without portages and some...

    Snaps?

No Title I sewed up a two piece wind/rain/spray cover back around 2009 and used it every year since. I used: lightweight ripstop coated poly as it won't stretch like nylon when wet; a heavier poly edging to hold the snaps and for abrasion resistance over the gunnels; one-way snaps (I...

Adirondack ice out Hot Tent Gathering

Thanks for the info. I was wondering about a sled since I discovered a few weeks ago that my uhmwpe sled didn't hold up to being driven over by my pickup truck. :( April 1,2 and 3 is now in my calendar as it's only a 3 hour drive from Ottawa. cheers

Adirondack ice out Hot Tent Gathering

Just double checking here. Is this going to be sledding into a sight or pretty well a short walk between vehicle and tent sight? thanks. Ted

Fundraising knife nearing completion. There is still time to enter the raffle.

Just sent my 25 (I even remembered to make it U.S.D.) via paypal. Regardless of who wins this beautiful knife, hats off to Robin for all of the work (and money) that he puts into this site. And another big thanks to Rippy for donating his time and workmanship to make such a good looking knife...

Adirondack ice out Hot Tent Gathering

The Sarnac/Tupper area is only, depending on the border crossing, about a 3 hour drive from Ottawa. This get-together is really got me interested. Unless something untowards happens, I'll be there. One person 7x9 cabin style tent - was 100% canvas before using some translucent rip-stop nylon at...

    Photo of the day

Although we did this in sea kayaks (as we do every year) it's also a favourite spot for canoeists. http://parkerclan.ca/georgianbay2015.php Enjoy Ted

    Squall

Forgot to add that my little ADC wind gauge showed gusts up to 80 kph at it's peak. Some may have noticed that I also use a double blade as well as my single blades. When I saw the squall approaching, I switched to the double blade to get me into that little cove and ashore asap.

    Squall

Was up at La Vérendrye Reserve for a few days. Saw a what looked like a squall heading my way from the end of the lake. About three minutes after getting off the water, the micro-burst hit ripping off some large branches and throwing them 100 or so feet out into the water. I haven't seen...

    Ice out not soon...

Mihun09, I really really like the idea of getting up-to-date photos like that of areas where I want to canoe. Where do you find such great satellite photos? It's such a good spring planning tool. Thanks Ted

    Site reached usage allotment,

X2. Thanks for sharing this Robin. Having run a few sites over the years, band-width was a real issue even way back then. I had to decide what would benefit the strong majority of my clients for a cost that I could afford. Lost a few good people but I really didn't have much of choice. I just...

    Black bears that appear threatening

I've probably posted this before but can't remember so here it goes. At 05:30 this morning I had the urgent need to get out of bed to find plants in need of watering. Just as I unzipped my tent, I heard several rather large snorts and woofs from behind me. I rolled out, stood up and there...

    Lanterns for canoe camping

Like Mama I use a Black Diamond as well. Mine is the Orbit which packs down to 4 inches and 5 ounces. I use it with rechargeable AAAs. Hang it or set it down, the diffused lighting great on the eyes and light area. Also doubles as a small flashlight. Works well for making an after-dark supper or...
