    Picking up a Cronje

IMG_0329 IMG_0323 Brought it home this morning, like most of the canoes I buy, this one was only a short 25 minute drive away. It was sent out by the previous owner for a full repair job at a local shop. Repaired yes, fully restored.... no,.. but that's fine for me. Brand new canvas, never...

    Picking up a Cronje

The Cruiser I picked up was not one of Keewaydin canoes, but watching a bunch of their videos swayed me into paying more than I wanted to for this canoe. Canoe porn as my wife says... The canoe went under full professional repair job, not museum work, but it's now nearly new :). Will be picking...

    Picking up a Cronje

I picked the Cruiser up mostly for tandem use, likely only one of my kids or the wife in it with me, none of us would be considered a large paddler. If I run a river not suitable to take my kids on and the water level is high enough, I'll be more than happy to run the 17 footer solo. It's more...

    Picking up a Cronje

I'll be picking up a new to me Chestnut Cronje tomorrow. Anyone know how they are for a tripping canoe? 3 or 4 night trips at the most, none of the 2 week stuff for me... yet. Am I correct that Keewaydin camps use them? Or did they mostly use Prospectors?

    Sanders?

I use all types of sanders, mostly just so I don't have to change grits as often. They all get the job done to some extent. My only advise would be to get good quality sand paper, the little extra you spend is well worth it.

    Poor Man's Duluth Pack

I never really thought about the weight, but you're right it is a tad heavy. I've never actually seen a "real" canoe pack but I'm guessing that the waxed canvas would likely be lighter and a bit more comfortable. I'll treat myself to a real Duluth pack some day, but at a fraction of the price...

    Poor Man's Duluth Pack

The two bag I have are somewhat compressable I'd guess, typical fold the top opening and squeez out the air. Not a true compression sac though. Typically carry spare clothes in the sealine and haven't had need to use the green bag. My packing will all change this year anyway as I built a wanigan...

    Poor Man's Duluth Pack

I figure I can lash an axe to something on the backpack, would have preferred a pocket to drop the head into though. The barrels (have a couple) are 30 litres. With one in the pack, it's actually not that bad on the back. I don't really encounter portages much and the ones I do are not that...

    Poor Man's Duluth Pack

I've always wanted a proper canoe pack but could never justify the expense. The other day I found and old Swiss Army backpack, green canvas material with the rubber like coating. My initial thought after getting it home a stuffing it with gear is that it will do the job just fine, this concerns...

    Photo of the day

I'll add a little maritime content here... Miramichi This was taken about 10 yrs ago. Early May trip down the Miramichi River in New Brunswick. Take note of the snow still on the far bank... brrrrr. Shot is taken at Burnt Hill rapids, google it will provide some nice videos of others riding...

    Axe handle build

The canoe is a 15' Cedarwood, assume it's their version of a Chum. If I play my cards right, I may be able to pick up a Chestnut Deer (Pal) in a couple of weeks. Been looking for a 17' Cruiser or Prospector now for some time but not much luck, the 16' Deer may have to do,assuming I can get it....

    Axe handle build

Axe is complete. No photos of shaping the top of handle, misplaced memory card.... likely buried in shavings from the handle. Finished product turned out pretty good for a 1st timer. IMG_0307 IMG_0308 IMG_0306 IMG_0304 For about $15 and some enjoyable shop time I now have a nice vintage...

    Axe handle build

Took on the top of the handle this afternoon. didn't have camera with me but i'll see about getting some shots tomorrow. Here's a quick shot with the phone. IMG-20150403-00375 Before I sink a wedge into it, I have to option of getting the head polished down at a family members machine /...

    Axe handle build

New approach... that handle on the Walters is nice, i'll put some effort in it to try and salvage it with wedges and oil. Still want to continue with my project so I simply put an ad out looking for an old axe head. An hour later and $10 out of my pocket, I picked up an old Hults Bruk (1.0...

    Axe handle build

For the sake of a couple od bucks, i'll pick up some wedges and give it a shot. Should be able to find another axe head to continue the project down the road.

    Axe handle build

I could always drive in another small wedge or 2 to try and snug it up but I've always heard this wasn't a proper fix. If it buys me a couple years i'd be all for it if I can keep the original handle. Thoughts on the extra wedges???

    Axe handle build

Beautiful, yes, but if the head comes off when I swing it I may not be around any longer to enjoy it :)

    Axe handle build

I've built my share of paddles, worked on a few canoes and have made and sold all kinds of nic nacks for the wife and others. For the sake of trying to match my original axe handle, I've decided to take a crack at making my own. I'm by no means an axe expert and when it come to making things...

    Couple axe questions

Thank Guys, No work today so I've decided to tackle making my own handle. If the handle doesn't turn out, I can always burn it :)
