    Miramichi River, New Brunswick

The Miramichi River runs through the middle of nowhere in the middle of New Brunswick (think banjo's). It's one of the main tripping rivers in the province for those properly equipped. This was our first time down in about 6 years and I was looking forward to getting back on the water. Canoes...

    Picking up a Cronje

I picked up a second royalex canoe that better suits my needs (a 16' Esquif Prospecteur). The Cronje in this thread is up for sale, $1400. I'm still after another 17' royalex tripping canoe like a NC Prospector, may take one on trade.

17' OT Tripper vs. 17 Prospector

If you're after a 17' Royalex tripping canoe and have the opportunity to buy one (assuming it at a good price) I'd just go ahead and get it. You won't go wrong with an OT Tripper, great canoe for it's purpose. The NC 17' Prospector would be a great choice too but with the demise of royalex it...

    installed web seats

I always rip out those molded plastic seats from Old Town. You would think the company would clue in that many solo their larger canoes and the molded seats become pretty useless. IMG_0309

    Miramichi River, New Brunswick

Planning on my first trip of the year this weekend, 2 nights on the Miramichi River in New Brunswick. Black flies and low water will be expected. Great video here of another group (don't know the guys in the video...) running the river in 2012 under similar low water levels...

Kid-friendly, week-long, Eastern Canada trip suggestions?

Spednic Lake system then into the St. Croix River would likely meet your needs for a week long adventure if you wanted to travel to New Brunswick (or Maine for that matter) Trip report link of my paddling buddy of the Spednic lake system. I think we'll be doing this route in July...

    Week long tripping saw?

I've always tripped with a simple bow saw, they don't take up much room in a canoe. Now if you need one for backpacking too then a folding saw may be preferred. You could always do what many other do and just let someone else take a saw.

    Show me your rack :)

This is my current setup, works well but due to it's size and weight it's not easily removed and stored when not in use. I break it down when I store it so it's not in the way. I'd like to use a setup that incorporates the pocket holes instead, any suggestions?

    Picking up a Cronje

Actual Prospectors don't come up too often around here, quite uncommon such as the Cruiser are. Oddly enough there has been a 17' Prospector hanging in a carport for years less than a 5 minute walk from my place, Don't think its seen water in 20 years. Owners have no desire to sell it... it's...

    MR Explorer find

I wouldn't waste a nice 16'-18' piece of ash on royalex canoe. Why don't you just scarf together a couple easy to find shorted length of ash? Done right, most wouldn't notice and will last a good number of years with proper care of the canoe. Save your long ash for attaching to ribs on a canvas...

    Paddles

For shallow rivers I use paddles similar to Sugar island but don't find them as nice in deep water. These paddles are only about 6" wide, plans for the paddles were taken out of a book with a bunch of templates, may have been Graham Warren's books on paddle making.

    Paddles

I do have some power tools that help for making laminated shafts, a jointer, band saw and a thickness planner. I use a hand held electric planner to take off most of the excess, normal hand tools would work just fine, just more time consuming. Once the blade is roughly shaped I take out the...

    Paddles

For years I paddled only shallow rocky rivers, with cheap big box store paddles. Tried one of these paddles when I moved to doing a bit of lake travel and the difference was night and day.... and they look nice too. So if not an ottertail for deep water, what's everyone's preference?

    Paddles

I made a few of these modified otter tail paddles over the winter, hands down my favorite deep water paddle. Butternut, ash and maple laminations. Great little project if you have a few tools kicking around. [url=https://flic.kr/p/rXeRUd][/url JP

    Old cookset worth using?

I picked up this old nestable cook set over the winter thinking it may come in handy and it was dirt cheap. IMG_0319 Appears to be old aluminum construction, similar to 1960's military cookware if that helps. My concern is it's old and aluminum... is it safe to use or should I bother?

What else ya got? You would look good in a 17' Cruiser :)

    Picking up a Cronje

As they say, there's one in every back yard up here.... how I wish wish that were true. Oddly enough, I have better chances to find a good used Chestnut than a royalex canoe. With our rocky rivers, royalex canoes are preferred. I shelled out for this one as it's the 1st Cruiser I've seen in 10...

    Picking up a Cronje

Was just looking over the scarf, not an illusion but the new piece is not beveled like the original. Not something I'll loose sleep over.

Removing stains from a RX canoe UGH

Unless your trying to sell the canoes, I wouldn't bother cleaning them and really, if someone want to buy it then they should understand that canoes get dirty too.
