    Freedom 17 Strip build

Looks great so far! If you look long and hard enough, you can see a boat in there somewhere. It will magically appear before your eyes before you know it. I really like your strongback approach. It looks like it would be quite a bit more stiff than the traditional wood/laminated beam set up...

    Hi

Welcome to the site Vicki, You'll find some great folks here. Very helpful to say the least. If you are interested, I am at the tail end of my cedar strip build. It's documented here and is titled Hiawatha long term build. You can find it in the DIY section. Now, if you do go for a little read...

    Photo of the day

Here's a fun pic. I love to see this sign after a long car ride. I'm sure most of you will recognize this one. For those who don't...its Algonquin Parks busiest entrance gate.

    Red's Tremblay

Thanks so much for the info Karin. I'm just kinda feeling out what it would take to restore these pieces of history. They are not "just boats" They are vessels of someones past. Maybe a means of transportation, maybe a way to put food on the table, maybe a ticket to a magical journey of a...

    Red's Tremblay

Mihun, Very nice restoration. You must be quite happy with it. Just so I know, how many hours did it take for you to take it from the poor state it was in, to the beautiful craft we see before us? If you don't mind, could you provide me with a material cost too? I'm just considering taking on...

    Busy winter

That's a shame Alan. I too have had that happen. If you can afford it, I'd keep it in your stock pile. There is always a need for some material of any kind. It really won't go bad. I'd order more and get them to repeat the order back to you. Maybe just an off day for the order desk. :)

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

Hi all. I’'ve been ill with a cold for almost a week now plus some business travel. It doesn’'t make for very productive progress. Here'’s where we are…... I applied the coats of epoxy to the inside and outside of the hull. I found a really nice day (17 deg.) and all went...

    CAD

Alan, I will try to make this as simple and as clear as I can, but please don’t think I’m in any way talking down to any of you…not my intent. There are some of you out there that may have more experience than I do, so please add if you feel you can. I started out using the drafting table and...

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

Hey, thanks guys (girls?) I feel guilty sometimes that I glean so much more than I can contribute in my small build write up. I am trying to be completely open and transparent with what I communicate to give everyone the total story. Good, bad, and ugly. I could have omitted my errors and...

    CAD

Hey Alan, I've been using CAD (both 2D and 3D) for a very long time, but have also drafted the old school way too. You know, drafting board and t square type stuff. Anyways, I'll write up a blurb and post, but it may not be until tonight

    Hiawatha 15- Long term build

Despite my setbacks here and there, I am actually making some progress, and feeling pretty good about it. I got the epoxy in today, so I’m trying to figure out when to apply the additional coats to cover up my, uh, little epoxy mishap. I mentioned that I was going to machine scuppers into the...

    Red's Tremblay

Mihun, Have you ever found that steaming the oak discolors it? Like when you handle it too much and it develops purple marks where your fingers were? I can't recall ever having to steam bend oak in anything I have ever built, so am very curious about it? As always, looks really nice Momentum

    Rolling canoe rack ideas?

Hey cflcanoe, Here's an idea...have you seen the flat bed trucks that deliver slabs of glass? They have racks that sit up vertically, but are on a slight angle. If you were to use that particular design, and fasten a few 2x4's horizontally straight out to act as arms for the canoes, I think that...
