These are actually 78". Humongous! But they fit within the span of the mirrors (only just) which seems to be the prevailing outer limit as far as I could tell. Yeah, I imagine there will be some head bumps. Wish the caps came in colors. I suspect that anything I might try to do to color them...

Tonight's project... removing some whispbars that fit between the rails and replacing them with the widest round bars that the law will allow. Imagine my disappointment when the svelt Whispbars were too narrow for the free boat sitting in my old man's garage (Old Town Camper 16 RX). I could fit...

So circling back around, assuming I've got my food packed away securely somewhere else, what size portage packs should I be looking at for 2-3 night trips?

I actually live in Raleigh city limits. We rarely get any kind of bears this far in, and when they show up it makes the evening news. But they are all over the place down east and throughout the Dismal Swamp.

I should probably clarify on my sleeping situation ... three season camping in the eastern 1/2 of North Carolina, sleeping in a Hennessy Hammock with whatever level of blanket or sleeping bag the weather forecast is calling for.

I'm not really looking for packing out for 5+ nights at this point in time. But I'm in a position shortly to go on 2-3 night trips. For the kitchen pack, we do have black bears & coyotes here, and red wolves are coming back as well... so I'm guessing a food barrel is the way to go there...

No Title Otto is still a baby at heart, and just starting to get used to the outdoors. I had him in the backyard over the weekend, and while I stress tested my new ultralight hammock, Otto was fascinated by the chickens (more like entertained... I don't think he wanted to make a go at them). So...

I've got a nice crop of them coming up in my front yard inside of Raleigh city limits. Hopefully the wildlife doesn't clue in to how tasty they are (I have yet to get any apples from my front yard thanks to the squirrels... and the birds make off with most of my grapes).
