    Quetico Questions?

Bob, I have taken that path a couple of years ago with my son and two friends in late July. Aside from Quetico, which was very busy, we ran into no one from Jean to Beaverhouse and could have eaten fish every day had we wanted to. Some nice campsites, too. See you at Canoecopia. I am working it...

    FS Bell Wildfire solo

1994 Bell Wildfire in fiberglass/kevlar composite. Light blue gel coat with new ash gunnels/thwarts and mini-cell foam flotation. New contoured, cane seat and drops are available. I saved this one from being cut into shelving. Seats are set at combination kneeling/ seated position. Asking $1000...

    FS Sawyer Autumn Mist

1993 built Goldenglass hull in ivory. Rescued from an unappreciative college student and lovingly repaired and buffed to a brilliant shine. I have the original Lexan seat or a softer poly seat if you prefer. This is a minimally rockered, high volume boat for a 200# passenger and gear for a week...

Picked up my Headwaters Canoe! Pic heavy post.

Nice boat, Bob. I'm looking for something to do this week. I was planning to go to Duluth but that fell through. Any suggestions? Just got off the phone with Skip. I haven't paddled with both of you for years. Maybe I'll make it up to see the new boat. Bob P

    Canoecopia--Madison, WI

March 11-13 at the Alliant Energy Center. The best three days of the year when I am NOT ON THE WATER. Hours of seminars, shopping, time with manufacturers, talking with outfitters, and best of all, time with paddlers who share my passion for all watersports and the outdoors. I'll be found at...

    Swift Shearwater

16' isn't too big, the small amount of differential rocker makes tight maneuvering more challenging. I would not have considered taking my Shearwater on the Kickapoo River here in Wisconsin. Your definition of tight streams may be different from mine.

    Canoecopia 2015

I'll be there working the show. Bob B, if I qualify as an old friend, is it because I'm old? Just kidding, Bob, I look forward to seeing you there!

    Swift Shearwater

I owned a Shearwater and it did most of what you are asking it to. Small tight streams will be a challenge at 16'-2". The weight of an older boat will be in that 50# range in a kevlar expedition layup. I traded that boat for a Nova Craft Bob Special for my 1-2 week solo expeditions and sometimes...

    Lightweight Solo Tripping

Great suggestions for lightening the load. I have begun to explore ways to modify what I bring with me. Although I like to enjoy my food, it is amazing how food can add greatly to the pack weight. Clif bars are a great source of energy and gorp is a staple of any trip, but both are quite heavy...

    buying used

Glenn, I'm glad you got THAT out of your system! It can become quite complicated. BTW, I have also been wary of buying used especially in the current economic climate we are it. A call to your registration bureau (WIDNR in Wisconsin) is a good idea and better if you get the HIN before you buy...

Yes, I did. And Jeanne Bourquin presented a "Building and Repairing Wood/Canvas Canoes" seminar. Jeannie teaches building at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN.Her own shop is in Ely. She built her first wood/canvas canoe with Jerry Stelmok and is a member of WCHA. I'll be straight...

    Canoecopia March 7-9, 2014

Another Canoecopia behind me. I'm not sure which is more exhausting, working the show trucking boats to and from the convention center or shopping the overwhelming amount of product available for purchase. I saw some speakers that did a very good job of presenting information and...

    Do we overthink buying decisions?

Recently I've been buying boats that have been poorly maintained and refurbishing them. My discovery has been that there are a lot of wonderful boats out there to be enjoyed. Each one has a particular reason for being and finding the sweet spot of that hull is my pleasure. I bought a...

    Do we overthink buying decisions?

Good point YC! I read and reread the post in question and for this poster we may be over thinking. Who knows, the next poster may have us scratching our heads for more details to help him/her out. Each buyer has a purpose and some don't have the experiences we have and wouldn't know what...

    tough decision

Meopilite, you'll find it interesting to know that Charlie is one of the most influential canoe designer/builders of the solo canoe movement. So you might not see eye to eye with his philosophy. He's a great resource for many of the nuances of canoe design--I have made inquiries of him. Of...
