In addition to the above suggestions, sunlight makes a huge difference. On fairly calm days in the fifties, I've had success fiberglassing the decks of my ketch as the sun warms the surface to over 70. The sole of the cockpit and the gray hull of my dinghy get to over 100f on a sunny spring day.

One other thought: The canoe in my avatar was built as an inexpensive wood canvas, later stripped and fiberglassed. It is not symmetrical side to side. I don't know if that happened on the original build, extensive use, or the repair. I can't tell the difference while paddling.

Epoxy and other resins degrade in sunlight. Old fiberglass boats get chalky looking. Penetrol will brighten them up, there are probably other products too. Painting covers the discoloration and prevents further decay. I wouldn't worry about a finish even if it transferred "chalk" by touch. If...

To each his own. I know guys that wouldn't get underway with a scratch in the varnish. None of my boats are perfect, nor my techniques. But they do get used.

I've had some fun in really cheap boats. My three Folbots ran $150-$260, and the two I sold got my money back. I've accepted at least one dead boat, and helped my Dad with another. They didn't make it back to the water. The eight boats I own now more than fill my free time.
