Ever have a downriver wind push you up river?

I used to sail a sloop up and down a narrow canal. There are houses and trees along it which would obstruct the wind or change its direction. On one occasion I remember the top of the sail billowing one way while the lower portion filled the other. Sailing that same boat under the Brooklyn...

    Photo of the day

Love it! My father built a canoe when I was four, and another a few years later. I have great memories of those boats, learning to paddle, seeing my little brothers sitting in the middle as I had. Glad to see you're starting them young.

Are you setting those parts in cups of oil to soak into the grain? I did that with white oak in linseed once, it took time but went all the way through lengthwise.

    Ballast Placement

I think that many tandem canoes paddled solo will want ballast forward. I use ballast routinely in sailing canoes, I sit in the bottom aft of the thwart, the ballast goes forward. I've used water jugs, bags of sand, concrete blocks and exercise weights. Yesterday my wife and paddled my most...

We're in a jam! We need white oak.

Check with the Marine Museum in St Michael's. They do a lot of building. There's a small boat shop in Lewes too, run by volunteers. My wife's grandfather had a sawmill down there, but he and it are long gone.

    Can a Mercedes-Benz E350 be a canoe car?

From 2006-2019 I used a 1979 Cordoba to car top dinghies, canoes, kayaks without racks and to tow trailer boats. I put canoes and kayaks on the top of a 2006 Magnum with a sunroof and no racks. I would put a canoe on anything but a convertible.

    Lumbar Support Backrest

One of my Folbots has a seat with inflatable cushions that make it very adjustable. That seat was an upgrade over their standard foam seat. Folbot is out of business, but perhaps someone makes something similar.

A cautionary tale of deaths on Shoshone Lake in Yellowstone.

Funny, I'm just the other way. I've spent so much time on saltwater that it's my comfort zone. Usually I paddle salt marshes and bays, sometimes Long Island Sound. I have paddled a light double paddle canoe halfway around Cape Ann.

    Crazy expedition trips

Hannes Lindemann paddled across the Atlantic in the fifties in a folding Klepper I think. There was another German who went from Europe to maybe Australia in another folder. I'm not sure where the line is between a challenging dream and a dangerous stunt.

    DIY milk crate portage cart

Thanks Chip, I failed to mention that I was using a cart with fat tires when boat hauling which really helps on soft surfaces. A shipmate and I were just recalling an incident where we hauled a dinghy over snow covered ice. It was extremely difficult.

    DIY milk crate portage cart

I like it. I don't know if it would have helped your muddy situation, but I have a method for pulling a boat across a soft surface. I use a long rope, leaving the boat at the water's edge and walking to a firm spot. Then set my feet and pull the boat to me instead of sinking in at every step...

Hello from Upper Michigan Lake Michigan shore

Welcome aboard! I often use a double bladed paddle in my canoes. I also find that fore and aft trim can affect tracking. If you can shift your weight or add some moveable ballast, the boat might track better. Longer boats generally are more inclined to go straight, so your 11' boat will want...

    Curiosity and a Derelict Canoe

It's pretty, and not common. I hope it doesn't go into a landfill.
