    Receiving SPOT locations

I'm enjoying following my friend Carp in the Allagash region right now. I get a daily email once they're in camp with a map location. The first one was at the drive-in campsite on Umbazooksus Stream, then Day 1 they went down through Chesuncook Lake and up to the Horse Races Campsite. Next...

    Snowboard bags for paddle transport

I have used an old ski bag, which will also fit a 2-piece pole.

    Best Bug Defence

Of course up in the Allagash you also have to worry about aliens. I heard you should poke them in those big luminescent eyes - we don't know if there's anything sensitive in the crotchal region.

    My new cologne

I've been drying food nonstop out in the mudroom. I put my raincoat on this morning and have been smelling like a cross between curry and spicy jerky.

    Re-Purposing Old Paddles

I'm collecting old Feather Brand paddles for a wind chime.

    First Swim

Well, I fell in the Charles River last night. I was paddling a Sawyer Shockwave, a vintage lightweight go-fast solo canoe. This thing has incredible tumble-home which may have been what did me in. I was paddling upstream against a decent current, but with a strong tailwind. It was time to...

    Sixty Strokes

It's a great life if we don't weaken! I'm 62, planning on retiring in 2.5 years. And yes, I am slowing down as well. But then I compare myself to my paddling partners that are about 20 years younger than me, so if I'm comparatively a little sluggish at the end of three mile portage, I'm OK...

    handware

Looks like the Atlas 282 gloves are the same as the blue lobster gloves. I think I'll have to give them a try. By the way a good coat of Mr. Zog's Sex Wax on the pole reduces the amount of water running down the pole and into your coat sleeve at least 95%, and that is huge when you're doing...

Bowron Lakes Aug 25-Sept 1 2017. No wind. No rain.

Somehow I missed this TR too. YC we had the same zero wind three weeks earlier. One of the most memorable trips ever. Can't go back though, it'll never be that good again.

    handware

Last Saturday we poled up the Nissitissit in Pepperell MA. Some mild rapids, some smooth but strong current, and a lot of just plain pleasant going. If anyone else was out you'd know it was about 40 degrees out with a fair strong wind. Necessarily, handling the pole means your gloves are...

    Whitewater Bent Shaft

I prefer a straight shaft for whitewater but if I have a bent shaft in my hand that's OK too. For draws, I just use it "backwards" and can do a monster pull on it. I'm always in a big boat full of gear so the extra moments it takes to turn the paddle in my hands is usually not the main issue.

Solar charger for my camera question.

So i have a Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar panel, with a 5V usb port, a 6.5V cord for linking multiple panels and a 15V cord with a proprietary plug on the end. Now bear with me, the 15V cord attaches to a cigarette lighter outlet. My camera battery charger has a 12 to 24 volt plug for plugging into a...

    The Porcupine River

Folks might getting sick of all my trip plans, jumping from one trip to another. It started as the Idaa Trail between Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes in NWT, then because of the travel expense it became the Colville on the North Slope of Alaska. Then because of the uncertainties of Polar...

    Rowing Canoe Rehab

I get to post this here because my wife was looking in craigslist and found a "rowing canoe". It was a peapod rowboat and I got it for a song. Seven million dollars later the mahogany brightwork is about 4 coats of varnish into glowing. You can just about fall into the grain, it's so nice and...

    clip-on telephoto?

I have very nice everything-proof camera. Even I can't wreck it. Problem is it's only 4X zoom and wildlife never comes over and poses for me. So I was thinking about those clip-on zoom lenses for smart phones and wondering if I could rig one onto my camera. Then I thought about connecting...

    Raccoon attacks man in Pa.

I think it's too much work to carry a gun. I've gotten bit by plenty of loose dogs, but I can't think of a time I got bit by a wild animal. I'd be like, "Wait a minute there Mr. Rabid Raccoon, I have to run in the house and get my gun out of the safe and load it up. You just sit there and...

    spray covers

I bought a boat in 2014 that came with a cover similar to CCS. Used it for the first time over Thanksgiving. It was nice for keeping the winter weather, drips and splashes out of the boat. It took a little discipline for loading and unloading gear but by the end of the weekend it wasn't bad...

North Slope while it's still there.

I'm sure the details will change but right now it's 4 of us in two 17' pakboats. Not sure whether we're ending at Umiat or Nuiqsut but we expect to fly to Deadhorse and hope to hire a van to Fairbanks. I'm not the lead planner, so I don't know all the details but we have been in touch with...
