    Outboard

We have multiple decent canoes for paddling, i don't plan to give up paddling anytime soon. I've always wanted to try a sidemount outboard. My wife's uncle offered us his old Grumman 17' canoe that was a already registered as a motorboat so we accepted it. After searching for a suitable used...

    Load Stop Project

I can't tell the spacing of the u-bolt from your photo, but I'd consider drilling a couple of holes through a hockey puck to take the place of the steel plate. I hate the sport of hockey, but I love hockey pucks for many projects that need a strong piece of rubber for a cushion or a vibration...

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

I use a lot of spar varnish on my boats that have been coated with an epoxy. I do not enjoy working with varnish, but I feel it's necessary in that instance. I hate redoing the varnish, but unfortunately it's a frequent task for me. Anytime I have wood without epoxy, I use some sort of oil...

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

I would never choose Ely, but there are many areas within an easy drive of great paddling in Northern Minnesota that would be very desirable.

    Paddling with carpal tunnel syndrome

I had the surgery late fall or early winter, so I missed a year of cross country skiing, but was able to paddle and row by spring. I keep planning to have the other hand done, but other injuries and illnesses have take priority recently.

    Paddling with carpal tunnel syndrome

I've changed the way I grip the paddle to hold it as loose as possible. I also stop paddling frequently to dip my hands in the cold water to help reduce the swelling. The most important thing for me is to wear my wrist brace each night while sleeping. I did have carpel tunnel surgery on one...

    EM White Guide 20'

I have been considering building a freighter, grand laker square stern as my next boat project. But then I wonder what that 20' White Guide would be like with a outboard bracket and a small motor. If you build one, I hope you share it here, I'd like to follow along.

    Paddle - varnish vs oil

I gave up on varnish many years ago. I've been using tung oil with good results. I use it on the whole paddle, not just the grip.

    Smartphone or tablet as GPS?

When we go hiking I carry a GPS while my wife uses Avenza on her phone, I also have and occasionally use Avenza on dry land. When we're on the water our phones are in small dry boxes that are inside of our dry bags. If our phones were to be somehow damaged by water we'd lose, at least...

Shirts for canoeing and canoe camping

My most loved item during mosquito season is "The Original Bug Shirt". My wife has worn them for about twenty years. I finally got one a couple years ago, and I love it. For me it's a game changer for a couple months a year.

How to carry canoe on F150 Supercrew short bed with trailer?

Here's our current setup, it works, but I'm not 100% happy with it. I feel like there's too much of the bow forward of the front rack cantilever. The timing of this thread is perfect. We are considering purchasing a full size pickup before next season, likely a Ford F-150 crew cab. I'm...

    Badger Paddles, two thumbs up.

I bought the Badger Woodland paddle in cherry about a year ago. I absolutely love it!! I was a beavertail paddler for many years before that. Beaver tail paddles are great for versatility, working equally well in deep and shallow water, but after 40 years of paddling my shoulders needed...

    Binoculars.

I have never liked weight hanging from my neck, so for most of my life my binoculars saw little use. Once I bought a harness I began to take them with me nearly everytime I go canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing, rowing etc... The harness distributes the weight nicely and they're always close at hand.

    Mississippi Speed Record

We had the opportunity to watch them go under a couple of bridges near our house on Wednesday, their first day, they're really cruising along. I don't think I'd ever want to travel this way, but I'm fascinated watching their progress online. I hope they can keep it up all the way to the Gulf of...

Advice on severely long boat lead time.

I'm really happy to hear that the folks at Northstar are going to make things right for you,

Advice on severely long boat lead time.

We ordered a new Northstar early January, the boat is ready for me to pick up now. The folks at Northstar were just a phone call away when I had questions regarding build options before placing the order. I ordered through a dealer, they were also very nice to deal with. Part of my decision to...
