    Gunnel plug

My opinion is what ever is easiest. I doubt weight or strength are limiting factors. My only two concerns would be water and dirt getting into non plugged or partially plugged holes possibly leading to rot. Partially plugged holes seems more likely to create issues versus plug going all the...

    Can I borrow your axe?

I just remembered one story where the axe was the victim. A couple of years ago on the Two Hearted River in UP of Michigan I was attempting to trim a few branches obstructing the river from canoe passage and decided to used the axe because the saw was in a different boat. My bow paddler...

    Gunnel plug

You may want a little varnish or resin in the holes to keep water out. Filling the holes seems unnecessary from functional standpoint but aesthetics is a different story. Glued in dowels or resin with sawdust would both be options.

    Can I borrow your axe?

Technically you don't need an axe or a saw. For that matter you could nix the tent, sleeping pad etc. I don't "need" an axe but when it is late fall or winter paddling with a group of 5-8 cooking over fire in Michigan, but an axe can allow me to gather wood for warmth and cooking that a silky...

School me on carbon Fibre paddles

The expensive paddles are made in USA or Canada. The cheap ones are made by children with soon to have special needs due to their lack of PPE. Ya gotta love the market, it creates jobs and lowers the price of goods. Sarcasm people sarcasm....

Death in the Wilderness: What do you do with the body?

I question the premise that guilt of fowl play would be assumed. I think foul play would be considered but thought to be unlikely. Off course there could be red flags depending on the countless scenarios but Occam's Razor. How many old men with no history of murder are likely covering up a...

Death in the Wilderness: What do you do with the body?

I was just kidding about the viking funeral. Isn't burning a canoe some sort of high crime in Canada? LOL

Death in the Wilderness: What do you do with the body?

Glenn given your scenario there is no logic in taking the body out. There has got to be some sort of bear county rule to not travel with a dead body for two weeks in July not to mention dealing with the physical challenge of carrying an extra 120 to 220 lbs corpse. Therefore you must bury them...

Extra week sounds great! Does that make a motive?

Death in the Wilderness: What do you do with the body?

This is July and they have plenty of rations and I am a bitter old man that is full of crap. Peanut butter and Jelly or bitter, full crap old man who has been sitting in the sun a little too long. Your call Bill but if you choose the old man I am not so sure I want to paddle with you.

Death in the Wilderness: What do you do with the body?

If I am the dead guy either cover me with rocks and dirt, leave me to the birds and bees or stick me in my solo and give me a viking funeral. I am dead and do what makes you feel better. Then please enjoy your additional 15 days of tripping. I would hate to ruin a trip I planned with good...

Does anyone have a canoe set up with a rowing rig ?

A few years ago I picked up and old Sawyer X17 in need of repair. I have been rather impressed with the versatility of the X17. She has been used as a tandem, solo, and with oars. I paddled a few trips solo in the X17 while waiting for my Trillium to arrived. It was similar to driving a box...

What are your favorite paddle gloves

Pete you really have me wondering about you. "You always have plastic and duct tape in your van." Did your paddling friends nick name you Dexter or Candy man? ;)

    Svea 123

I have never used a Svea. Looks to be a cool little stove. How well do they simmer, boil, and how loud is it? I did a quick search and came up with this youtube video rebuilding it. There was more then one and probably better ones. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH0lkWinLcE Optimus appears to...

Very sad - Another fatal bear attack

Skinney Moose As unlikely it is that I will ever encounter such a scenario like your experience it does help keep me aware, practicing prevention and being prepared. So glad she was in the backpack.

Very sad - Another fatal bear attack

"This is the first fatal bear attack in the province since 1983." (Quote is taken from CBC article above) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America Bears are scary and rather unpredictable. Many of us have literally spent years of our lives sleeping in tents...

    Closing Rethinking firearms

That is one of the most civilized discussion around guns and carrying in the back country that you will find on any forum anywhere on the internet. We didn't even cross the Midwestern nice line let alone some other line. There is a time and place to close threads. Dave I respect and...

Portage clearing in the Greenstone Region

Bud Lite why would you drink that crappy beer? Haven't you acquire the taste for something good. A good IPA often has a 6-7% alcohol and allows you to not carry as much on the ports while still having the desired effect. Grab a Stout or Porter and you can even cut back on food weight.

Trolling with a fly rod for salmon/brook trout

The Salmon and Brookies need high dissolved oxygen. The dissolved oxygen level increases as the water temperature decreases. Therefore this time of year they will be down deep as stated above. They will come up into warmer waters to chase food but not for long. I was trolling to other day...

    Rethinking Firearms

I wonder how much our media environment hijacks our biological programing leading us to the believe of increased crime and loss of civility. The Facebook, twitter, Instagram etc. throw ads and info based on our clicks to similar media and intern sell advertising. We have evolved to watch our...
