    Beavers

Chip any chance it is canoe loaded with ugly bags of mostly water carrying paddles sliding along ice to get to open water. I have done that a number of times and it can leave similar marks.

The most you've ever paid for a canoe (buy or build)

The real question is how much did you pay per use. I bought my Trillium a couple of years ago and she has been out paddling over 300 times and many miles. I honestly tried to forget the cost but know it was over 3K. I think I better head out for a paddle to bring the average cost per paddle down.

    Wenonah and paddling technique

Sometime I uses switch paddling to make it fun and challenging. I paddle a lot of narrow creeks and rivers and love to increase the speed while attempting to stay in the small channel or make the narrow opening under the over hanging trees. It is not all switch paddling obviously but doing it...

Mike I believe that this particular canoe is gel coated.

    Mini-, cordless Chainsaws

All ya need is a Mike McCrea first aid kit. I think he even has spare leg but it is only the left and the toes were epoxy back on and only look frostbit because he added graphite to the epoxy.

Yellow Card make sure to buy the pumps (300) for the epoxy. It makes mixing much easier and precise. West System 207 shouldn't have any blush but it is always good to wipe down any cured resin coats with water before any sanding commences or the blush could cause future coats of resin to not...

    Wenonah and paddling technique

Sometimes while tripping I enjoy slow subtle quite one sided paddling. Sometimes while tripping you want to make miles/kilometers and sit and switch with balance is precise, efficient, and fast. As has been said Sit and Switch or any stroke is just one of the repertoire of paddle strokes and...

    Mini-, cordless Chainsaws

These look very handy for stream clearing. I paddle a number of small creeks and rivers and the Emerald Ash borer killed most of the White and black ash trees which have ended up in the creeks and rivers. I often bring hand saws but these small electric chainsaws like this might help keep a...

    Choosing a paddle size.

I think you all proved why we all have so many paddles. There is no perfect canoe or perfect paddle for all uses. At some point along the canoe craft experience enough skill build we find and appreciation for the subtlties of a paddle. I can make most paddles do what I need but the right one...

How To Canoe Self-Rescue On A Solo Whitewater Trip

Glen your last post is about right but I would like to include the getting your feet stuck under seat or stuck in upside down sea kayak as additional myths. I have often had throw bag at stern or at least easy reach. Big river or open water I see the use of attachment. I came across this...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Alan's last paragraph is a pretty good summery of my real fears. I am rarely worried while solo traveling but with groups I worry for the safety of the group and all the additional variable I can't control. My irrational fears are two. During lighting storms in my tent I imagine a lighting...

    DIY bags and cases

Curious to what has that many poles. Nice work on the bags. I keep thinking I should try may hand at making or modifiying gear.

    Open water canoe self rescue

Has anyone been in a situation where they really needed to do this? I have dumped on rivers which has always been easier to pull to shore and dump. I have also dumped getting in and out of canoes by shore. Otherwise I am not out in conditions where my brace, balance and what not created a...

    Open water canoe self rescue

Very nice info and video Alan. I find climbing over the stern or bow easier then climbing over the side. Tandems or with others steadying a canoe seemed very easy compared to solo. I can empty the water on lighter solos in same manner as video. For heavier and larger canoes if I start from...

    Open water canoe self rescue

Johnny 5 that seems reasonable on lakes. That brings up the old question of weather to have the gear strapped into canoe or loose. I genrally feel strapped in is better for rivers and loose with a line or strapped connected to gear for lakes so the gear stays together, is easily retrievable...

    Open water canoe self rescue

I practice flipping my canoe, emptying the h2o and reentering a couple times a summer. During practice is a really good time to experience how far you can push the gunnel under and bring back up, stand on the gunnels etc. I find it some what akin to "whipping cookies" in an icy parking lot...
