Milling planking for a W/C canoe

Dogbrain, you did it almost exactly the way I do it. The shop made fence is fantastic, I would have never thought of a broom handle! Im glad it went well.

Shop Tools Pet Peeves (a mini-rant)

I may be an extreme case as I make my living with my carpentry tools, day in and day out. I do high end custom trim and cabinetry on site, and custom furniture from my shop. I couldn't make what I need to in order to feed my family if I was disorganized. I switched a number of years ago to...

    Strip building a truck cap?

Can anyone foresee any issues with strip building a truck cap? My baby (1975 Jeep J20) is done and on the road, but it needs a cap. The bed is narrower than standard, so the run of the mill 8' cap won't fit, and finding an old Jeep one is like finding leprechaun gold. I could have one custom...

    Question for Osprey/Kite builders

Stripperguy, thanks for the offer! I have paddled one a friend here build a couple of years ago. I loved it, but when I put me and the frost river pack in it felt "sluggish". I should have thought of upping the scale. That's a good suggestion, and may be just what the dr ordered. Mem, I...

    Question for Osprey/Kite builders

I'm looking to build a new solo, mainly for 3-5 day trips in the Adirondacks. I love the design of the Osprey/Kite but... I'm 6'7" and 300#'s, 340-360 with gear. I don't think the Osprey/Kite has the volume. What is the opinion on lengthening it to 16' to handle my size/weight?

    Weather woes

It also comes down to being realistic with your abilities, especially if your solo. Know what you can and can not do, and stay within your limits. And as the Boy Scouts tought me "be prepared" always.

    Weather woes

I will keep my eye on the weather. If it is a trip I have some leeway as to when I leave, I may go a day or two earlier or later to accommodate the desired weather. If I'm locked into my departure date, I rarely cancel. As several have already stated, weather that creates potentially...

Extension to make a floating dock canoe friendly

What about a smaller section of a floating dock like jet dock. They are 2'x2' interlocking floating cubes. They are made to have small powerboats drive up on them. Our docks at camp are jet docks and they are gunnel height. Just sit down and swing your feet in!

    W/C keel removal

I'm looking for the direction of all our w/c experts here. I have a 1922 OT Charles River that was restored about 10 years ago (before I owned it). They did a great job, but installed a "lake keel" as spesified on the original build sheet. Two questions: 1. Is it a no no to remove it if it...

    Long Johns

I'll second dogbrain both in how he wears his long underwear and his preferred brand. I have worn Patagonia long underwear for 25 years. Everything from tele skiing to mountaineering to winter hunting to fly fishing. If I'm not going to be moving I'll use their R1 fleece as a base layer. I...
