    Motorized Canoes

I'll have to look for pictures but back in the 60"s when there were many many motor routes in the BWCA my dad bought a square stern aluminum canoe and a 3hp evinrude and we would travel all over. I was a kid and at that time couldn't understand why people would just paddle when they could use a...

    Hello from Southern Minnesota!

If you can find a time and place to do some paddling before you go but I know there are plenty of folks whose first canoe experience is in the bwca. You might be best to avoid some of the larger lakes.

Another new camping trend - individual tents

Don't really think this is a new trend, between hammocks and tents we have been doing this for years.

Helicopter Rescue of BWCA Canoeists Who Got Swept Over Waterfall

I listened to a podcast with one of the survivors, they had been there many many times, weren't drinking but didn't see a need for the PFD's. A PFD maybe wouldn't have saved a life but it would have made recovery easier. The survivor I listened to lost his brother on this trip. You just never...

    Isabella River, BWCAW?

I've put in at the campground and while I'm glad I did cause it was November and we got 14" of snow and the road to EP 32 wasn't plowed it does add 4 portages that added together are more portage length than the portage at EP32. The south kawishiwi is a very popular route often with few open...

    Isabella River, BWCAW?

Starting at Hog creek and trying to get from Perent lake to Isabella lake in the fall is usually a bad idea, there tends to not be much water between those 2 lakes. Hog creek is usually used as an in and out entry point.

    Isabella River, BWCAW?

There really aren't any long river/stream systems in the BWCA and most of them have more portages than a carefully planned lake route.

Results of the more stringent 2024 bear-proofing food storage rules in the BWCA

As a frequent visitor to the BWCA I think it's too bad this was needed but it was, too many sloppy careless campers resulted in many habituated bears which is as bad for the bears as for the humans. There was a lot of complaining but compliance was pretty simple - either get or rent certified...

    Isabella River, BWCAW?

The Isabella river flows from Isabella into Bald Eagle but the current isn't too strong. My guess is the Snake River and Little Isabella river are very low this fall.

Recommended PFD for solo canoeing and fishing

In MN an inflatable is only legal if you wear it 100% of the time. I would go and try a bunch of different ones on and buy the one you will actually wear.

Robin - so good to see you getting out there - thanks for another great video and report.

How accurate do you find Paddle Planner?

I find it very accurate for distance, campsites, portages, etc. but not so much on time. You can change how fast you paddle and whether you single or double portage but I think it still assumes you never stop paddling.

Helicopter Rescue of BWCA Canoeists Who Got Swept Over Waterfall

They were fishing above them in the early spring, the water was high and cold and one canoe got sucked in and the other followed to help, no one was wearing a PFD. Sad and tragic.
