    BWCA, May 2020

The innie tarp was mainly to protect the floor from my pups paws. I didn't see any ticks on our trip, one of the other guys found 2.

    BWCA, May 2020

The BWCA opened last Monday and I took two newbies in for a 5 night trip on Wednesday. We entered at #41 - Brule lake. Neither newbie had ever paddled a canoe much and had never done a portage. We hit the water around noon after a six hour drive avoiding staying anywhere overnight on the way...

If those seats are original it's probably a Mansfield, they used cane. Ribs and outer gunnels were most likely mahogany.

The Loon is a Navarro canoe. Navarro's were a family split from Merrimack and they were on the west coast for a long time but are now made in Rockford, Illinois.

    Experimental Plug for a mini-Merlin

Fiberglass mat does not work with epoxy, that's what I have always been told by the manufacturer, it does work great with vinyl ester.

The Stow Mansfield canoes like that are a knock off of the Merrimack canoe company. Stows were made for about 10 years, Merrimack is in its 66th year and they are in Minnesota now. Assuming it was made like a Merrimack there was no varnish used in construction at least. The ribs are put in...

    BWCA Open!?

Minnesota is lifting the stay at home order Sunday at midnight and allowing dispersed and remote camping so it is highly likely the Feds will follow suit and reopen the BWCA Monday for overnight use. Whether or not they also remove the fire ban remains to be seen.

    Gunnels and Screws

To each his/her own I say. Either way it is all about how you care for your canoe, a glued on or screwed in set of gunnels left out on the ground will need to be replaced sooner than later. Can't tell you how expensive canoes I've seen that need repair because of this.

    Kevlar/Aramid Weight

Aramid and Kevlar are the same, you can get different weights just like in fiberglass so it could be any of your various options.

Cliff Jacobson: NO to skid plates!

I like putting a piece of duct tape on the stems and challenge folks to see who can go the longest without wrecking it. Skid plates on a new canoe are just excuses for abuse.

    Treating Your Bottom Right

Please note that cabosil is basically powdered fiberglass and you should wear a mask and gloves. I suppose limited exposure won't kill you but it can and will get into the air and your lungs if not protected.

    Overhead Canoe Storage

I use these type of hoists, work great and are easily handled by one person and I got them for less than $20. I have 7 in my shop and we have about a dozen in the Merrimack/Sanborn shop.

    basalt-innegra

You will be way ahead if you get some peel ply tape to cover your overlap seams, pretty much eliminates the need to sand those seams.

Found these single serving "pour over" coffee packs when I was visiting my daughter in China, since then I got some on Amazon.

    Dogs. Especially canoe dogs

She grew 45 pounds over the winter, it's like starting over but she's getting the hang of it.
