MR Traveler Going to a New Home

After a year or more of looking at the Traveler, a boat I knew I wouldn't paddle much I put it up for free. Today Goonstroke showed up and after an bit o' time we got 5 thwarts in it as the gunwales were gone an he took off back to his place in Maine. We had a good chat and I wished him luck...

    The Mad River Eclipse Fix

I've been a slug getting this story done. Here's some of the tale: June 28, 2012 I ended up taking off the tape from yesterday's hole repair and was quite pleased to find that I didn't have do any sanding what so ever as it came out so smooth. Good deal and so I repeated the process on the...

Free Mad River Traveler in NH

I have a MR Traveler that I know I won't be working on so want to give it away for FREE to someone with more courage than I have to tackle it. I'm in Penacook, NH. Here's some pics of the hull, which for it's age is in good shape, 1989. It has an, I'm assuming, original wooden sliding seat...

    The Mad River Eclipse Fix

Lot's going on here these days so slow on posting more but here we go: October 6, 2011 I managed to get out on the Merrimack River today with Scott and it wasn't a disappointment. The wind was at our backs or quartering us for the entire way and the river was up, maybe 90,000 cfs and about...

    The Mad River Eclipse Fix

Round 3? on the story: August 27, 2011 I did a bunch of the Honey Do List this morning and then checked out the patch job I laid down yesterday. As I mentioned I wondering about this as I screwed up the pot mix. I laid the canoe down flat on the racks and started peeling off the tape and...

First Build: 17'-6" J. Winters "Yukon"

Really nice work Rick! I like the scuppered gunwales. I have always wanted to try it but just can't bring myself to do it. Maybe someday I'll get the courage to give it a try! dougd

    The Mad River Eclipse Fix

It was the RX-light. I'm thinking it was prone to cold cracking. First time fixing those but not the last and these days never again! Back to the story! August 25, 2011 The Honey Do List VS Canoe Work Well, I thought for sure this would be a quick fix but the Honey Do List came out ahead...

    BWCA Round Lake loop

I'm liking this story so far! I once did pack my tent but of course left the tent poles lying right on the floor where I was packing! Made for an interesting 2 day trip!

    The Mad River Eclipse Fix

Round Two of the Rebuild...Long! August 6, 2011 Finally got to work some more on the canoe. The ol' Honey Do List managed to get in the way. Now here is the strange thing that happened on the last batch of resin applying. I drizzled my resin in like I have been doing but when I went back...

    The Mad River Eclipse Fix

This is from a while back when I was new to rebuilding canoes so there was a lot of learning going on, a lot of swearing going on and more than one can of liquid courage to get through the task. It's a long write up so will add sections at a time...

    Removing glued in pads... suggestions

I glued a seat in backwards in my Rob Roy once upon a time. What a dumb arse move! I tried a lot of stuff but ended up using a hacksaw blade which I put duct tape on one end to protect my hand, yes I used a glove. I was able to bend the blade to the shape of the hull and got almost all of the...

    Snubbing down the Machias

Rick, Once you have poling down, lots of practice, it's not that hard. I have always found snubbing harder then going upstream and Carp is very good at it! Next time I'm in VT I should hook up with you and we should hit a local river. dougd

    Made my own canoe pole

My first pole was a maple liberated from the woods, fallen but still good wood. I did just like you Robin, skinned it and mine had a bend like yours which I ended up liking. Had it for a long spell until I went to aluminum. As far as foots for poles go I have never used one but for...

    Skid plate suggestions

I think from the pic I would go with Dynel cloth and not sleeve, I've used both. It looks like the cloth would cover better. I use West System 105/206 (I think that is right) for resin and on skid plates I mix in G-Flex which makes the skid plate rock solid. I'm sure other will chime in. dougd

Thoughts on a Mission Statement for Canoetripping.net

I have hesitated to say anything but will jump into the fray. As a past Admin I didn't see a need for a mission statement because we who make the board what it is know what it is all about and yes the board is because of all of us. Yes, there have been some "disagreements" about what makes a...

    Emergency Heat Source

After many years of this kind of fire starter, cotton, wax, whatever, I finally decided on a road flare. Yup, gets wet wood going at around 2000 degrees or something like that, takes up almost no space, light in weight and hell, they work! I carry them for when the weather turns. Outside of...
