    Lucifer's Portage

My worst carry so far has been the portage around the hulling machine rapid on the East Branch of the Penobscot river in Maine. It was muddy, root covered with quite a few blow downs to navigate. It didn't help that by 10 am that morning it was already 85 F with 107% humidity. My paddling...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I'm finally getting around to posting progress and errors. so I got too excited and only placed a sacrificial strip on one of the stems. I did figure out that I could use that when marking the taperson each side much easier than flexing a metal yard stick. the power plane made quick work of...

    50 Pounder Rebuild

Check the third rib down from top of your image. That looks like what I had on one of the ribs I 'backed'. I already had to remove the planking from where those ribs were so I could see that those marks went most of the way through the ribs I repaired. I might leave it if you don't have to...

    Thanks Glenn, that's really cool!

    50 Pounder Rebuild

On the 1917 guide I did a few years ago, I replaced quite a few ribs but I did try (successfully) backing a few ribs. Those ribs were kind of "pinch" cracked and I had to replace the planking in that area anyway. I replaced 21 ribs total and only backed 2 ribs. As far as the keel is concerned...

Deck rot, weep holes and gunk removal?

Stripperguy, could you include some images of your deck/bulkhead system? I'm trying to plan ahead on my Raven build and am looking for as many options as possible. Jeff

    50 Pounder Rebuild

Cool restoration! Do you need white cedar rib stock, cedar planking ( that I made from red cedar clapboards) or 18 ft ( I know your canoe is 15 ft) pre-bent spruce gunwales? I restored a 1917 Old Town Guide but got enough stock from Jerry Stelmock of Island Falls Canoe for 2 guides. After...

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

They say a journey begins with a single step. I think I walked about a mile 15 feet at a time. Back and forth setting up and adjusting the laser level (totally worth the $50).

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I'll have to go back into the post so I can add the photos in correctly. I went a little cheap and did 1/2" instead of the 5/8" the plans called for. I will have to do some shimming on the T-slotted forms but they were easily strong enough for the bending.

    Thus build the Raven, evermore

I want to thank everyone for their input on my thread asking about large solo. I had pretty much decided on the Green Valley Boat Works Raven by Jon Winters and your combined input clinched the decision. I really liked the idea of of electronic files to be able to have the forms cut and I knew...

    Poll: Gunwale gluer or screwer?

All of the threads about building a composite hull of from a stripper guarantees that I'm screwing at least the outwales so I can take them off when eventually making a carbon or innegra raven

Project Boat - Old Town Pathfinder

I really like the wider seat, butt;) I think I may have to make my own because I want the seat a little deeper (12").

Project Boat - Old Town Pathfinder

Mike, what is the dimension of the Conk seat from the back of the straight rear rail to front of the contoured rail? I've bought some seats and made some, but I think you are right and buying a Conk might be the smarter move for my Raven build.

    DIY No-Sewing Spray Covers

"About every six inches. That's about 64 snaps on a 16' canoe. Taking time to put those on and take them off every trip became too much of a hassle" I agree Glenn. I'm thinking of partial spray decks like on the Hornbeck yknpdlr shows here. By increasing the distance between snaps it...

    DIY No-Sewing Spray Covers

What was the distance between snaps? Did the snaps ever snag your fingers?

    DIY No-Sewing Spray Covers

Mike thanks for the clarification on snaps. It seems that brass would be easier. I also understand the polka dot distraction that you mention. The Northwater attachment system intrigues me but I'm not liking the visual I'm getting (in my mind) for that attachment system with the strong...

    DIY No-Sewing Spray Covers

Had anyone tried the YKK snad? It's a self adhesive snap? https://www.sailrite.com/YKK-SNAD-White-40mm-Adhesive-Backed-Flexible-Base-Stud. I'm looking for option although I realize tried and true stainless is probably the way to go.

    DIY No-Sewing Spray Covers

Mike, I really like the idea of leaving space behind the seat/ rear thwart for gear and throw bag. There's far more positive reasons for the space than for the extra cover of 8-12 inches. Having never used even a partial covers I'm sure I'll see improvement. Jeff
