Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

Another weekend overnight effort. Opposite corners to trees, back corner to the ground, front corner on a paddle with a clove hitch, center up into a tree branch. Best one yet. Even got rained on this time. Since I'm a clumsy oaf I hang stuff on lines I'm likely to trip over or otherwise run...

    Deliverance

Threre is a plaque to James Dickey at the University of SC where he wrote the book. Also a memorial library. I used to pass them daily on my way to and from work. https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=59166

    Canned meals?

Maybe burn/scorch the can to eliminate the food residue and odor before flattening it.

Tripping paddle build higher leverage/higher cadence?

This is about how I was trained to measure areas on maps. We had a piece of plastic with a grid scaled to 1:24k. Count all the squares completely in the shape. Then count all the squares that only partially overlap the shape and divide by two. Add the two numbers together for the full area...

Tarp type and set-up style, and let's see some pix

Been working on my tarp fu this summer while the sun shines so that when it rains I'll not be SOL. Tarp is a silnylon 10x12, poles are extendables from Eureka. Bowlines connecting line to tarp, taut line hitches providing tension.

Snuck out for another overnight on Friday. Nice living a 30 minute paddle to one of the CRPT campsites. About 930pm, well after my bed time and well after dark, a group of scouts showed up, startling the hell out of me. Five highschoolers and a scout master. Chatted with them some in the AM...

    Outdoor Canoe Storage

Under canvas tarps or Bag Lady bags and on saw horses for me. After a good snow storm I usually get the worst of it off just for my own sense of well bing. The coastal enviroment isn't something I have to deal with.

    Arborist throw bag?

Looking forward to a report. Having stuck (at least temporarily) multiple items in trees over the years, I can't beleive there's not a better way.

    Where Are All The Canoes?

I think most folks think paddling a canoe is like falling off a log. But those folks are fun to watch. :)

    Pandemic Changed Things

The local put in, which is actually on conserved land and isn't supposed to be there, went from one boat stashed there pre-covid, to seven or eight just sort of scattered around willy nilly post-covid. Then most of this summer there were maybe three boats there neatly placed on the rack the...

New gear for 2024 and 2025?

I'm also a big quilt fan, for pretty much the same reasons. Mine is from Enlightened Equipment. https://enlightenedequipment.com/

    Leaving firewood at camp

I expect it is because a lot of people don't cook over the fire anymore, and use a stove instead. The fire is decorative, and the stereotypcial firepit/hearth is a circle of stones.

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

My locale isn't bad. I live in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. I have direct access to the Connecticut River Paddler's Trail (and the Appalachian Trail if you like to walk), which gives me water access to the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Whitewater is available on multiple small rivers in...

    Bumps in the night

I had forgotten about the time I was group camping on a river in CO near another group. Some idiot from the other group decided to go drunk 4-wheeling in the middle of the night, and nearly ran us down in our tents. Not good to wake up to a revving engine with headlights fast approaching.

New gear for 2024 and 2025?

Got a couple of Alps Mountaineering 35L dry bags for various uses at the beginning of the summer. Wish they came in different colors, but orange at least is hard to lose/leave behind. And a Helinox Chair One chair, on sale from EMS. Might get another AM dry bag for next year, bigger though...

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

Put me down in the Whisperlite camp. Not the most high tech or lightest stove out there, but somehow it is very satisfying to use when compared to a cannister stove. And put me down for the camp chair as well. Last, not so much a luxury, but a down quilt has replaced a mummy bag for me. So...
