    A Raven from Scratch

Concur with Mem, thickened epoxy slightly proud, then use a flat scraper to get it flush, tint it with the copious amounts of wood dust you are currently producing (lol). If you want it to colour match, use cabosil (fumed silica) and wood dust in about a 10:1 ratio

    A Raven from Scratch

I will take a crack at answering. Assuming you intend to use a standard webbing approach side to side and bow to stern .... When you sit, all of the webbing puts the seat frame in compression ... the bow/stern and the port/starb pieces are being pulled in or put in compression, Additionally...

Is it my imagination, or is the rear of that truck loading down? How much does that canoe weigh .... whoa

    A Raven from Scratch

Great progress and the seat looks awesome, it will finish up nice. I think maybe putting the dado on the side might have been better for strength (just a thought for the future). Since you didn't make the distinction, there is "center" of the canoe and "Center of Gravity" of the canoe and they...

    New paddles, seats, & stuff

Nice work, just a suggestion for your seat joints. Where they join, a shallow dato will greatly enhance the strength of that joint. Without it, once you sit in it, the lateral sheer force is on the weak part of the joint. Brian

Canoe foot brace - side pegs or cross bar?

I built the first one with adjustable seats, took them out after the first season. I find it is easier to adjust trim by moving the gear a little, once you know where your packs go, trim isn't much of an issue IMO.

Canoe foot brace - side pegs or cross bar?

For the Ashes Solo, pack location likely isn't a concern ... with the max width amidship, there won't be much wiggle room in that area. If you haven't used foot bracing in the past, you won't have preconceptions about what you like and don't like, so either is going to suit you. I sort of view...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

I guess I actually see some one who is doing what they need to do, to keep getting out there ... good on you ... I wish you good paddling

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Are you sure the blade is symetrical, I know I have been playing with asym grips and blade. They can still be used on either side, but offer a lot more options for comfort and blade performance IMO

My 5th "Final Canoe": A Swift Carbon Fusion Keewaydin 15, at 80

You have landed with my absolute favourite canoe ... had a trip planned a few years ago that included a 2.5 kilometer portage, rented that boat from the plant in South River and simply fell in love with it. My current boat is a stretched copy of the 14' Kee and quite honestly, your short trip...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

It is interesting how in this paragraph you literally judge and condemn the actions of an entire group of paddlers, even after most of that group has just posted the idea that each type has a place in various paddling conditions. I didn't read a single users account saying that their use of a...

Looking good, and I like using a long board, I think it gives a better fairing. Although once I past 100 grit, i figure the actual material removal and fairing is finished ... I use an ROS for the final portion

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Other than the fact that a Kayak paddle is almost always unworkable in a canoe and that in the forum there seems to be a general misunderstanding that the terms Kayak and Canoe are interchangeable when referring to a double blade configuration, and they are not.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

I would suggest that the aesthetic pleasure is derived not from the tool, but from the intrinsic act of making that tool do what you want ... application of the knowledge and skill that you have attained. While I agree that as the canoe gets wider, the double blade becomes less desirable, there...

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

Please, pretty please quit calling them kayak paddles .... there are kayak paddles AND canoe paddles, they are not the same, they are not used the same and they are not designed the same. Brian

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

When I first started canoeing, I took lessons with a single blade, learning the various strokes, purpose and times to execute. Most of my paddling was in a tandem, with a partner, so we took lessons on working together. One of the things that was covered was also fitting the paddle to the user...
