    Solo on the Light Side

Strip Prep - taking place late fall 2023 Sorted through all of my left over strips and strip lumber, figure I have enough on hand for this project, so bonus, I don't have to buy strip lumber. The lesson learned from the previous build of this hull was that strips need to be narrower and...

    Solo on the Light Side

I will say it COST I have long held the belief that stemless wasn't a big weight saver .... I made the model, it really just doesn't produce the kind of weight savings you might think, in this build I think 5 oz is pretty close to correct answer. The weight of the inner and outer carved stems...

    Solo on the Light Side

Solo on the Light Side Over the past couple of months, I noticed something about the canoe lookingfor/purchase/release threads that I never noticed before. There is a repeating theme of wanting to tweak and change some things, wishing for others in various boats, as they get discussed. It...

    A Raven from Scratch

IMO the issue (I have the same with my seat design) is that turn is actually pretty tight. Going a little thinner would certainly help as Mem suggested ... also though, as you tighten, give some time to bend, don't tighten it too fast. You will note as you start to tighten and it bends, it likes...

I have a Taco with the 6 speed (2021) and love it, I had a new (2024) for 2 days ,,, they ruined it and I managed to get them to take it back ... so if you are thinking of the Taco manual, take a really good look and test drive first or get the last gen

Is Social Media Undermining and Distorting Actual Wilderness Experiences?

IMO there are few topics that Social Media doesn't distort and undermine .... I think that so many people feel compelled to provide answers or have comments on everything, even when they aren't versed on the topic, Couple this with the ineffective chaff filters most people actually have and it...

    A Raven from Scratch

I used Helicoil style inserts ... since I am lazy I will just link the relevant post from the last build, it covers the seat build and instalation, so you will need to scroll down to the helicoil install. You can get them in whatever size you want, but it is a bit of a kit and you need to buy a...

I’d like to see your wood (gunwales that is), plus a question

Jumping in a bit late here .... a lot of the performance of the gunnel finish needs to take into account the amount of exposure to the sun that the boat gets. If the gunnel is sealed and has good UV protection, it will stay looking like new .... the sun (UV) and moisture (nature) attack the...

    A Raven from Scratch

Gamma, it may be easier to install rails for the seat to sit on, than trying to match the hull. With those in place, you could just add some real estate where they land if required ... a lot easier than a new seat and a lot easier when you can take the seat in and out.

    Stress Relieving Paddle Design

I think in the OP post, you were complaining that the paddle pulled too hard, which really means you need to look at the area of the paddle. If I remember a typical OtterTail/Beavertail has about 105 - 120 square inches. so if your current paddle is pulling too hard, then that is likely the...

Sharing your location dot with spouse

Been camping for more decades than I want to admit, almost all of my camping is in no service areas. I decided a beacon would be a good idea, in case some one got hurt or needed help fast. Carried that beacon for 4 years, thinking I could be of help if something happened. Then on day 2 of a 7...

    Bob's Special stem mold

Was going to reference the thread from BearMountain, the site doesn't appear functional, so I have reposted it on this site, in the DIY section here: https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/lofting-canoe-molds-from-canoecraft-tables.129829/ It gets you the drawings, and this post in my last...

Lofting Canoe Molds from CanoeCraft tables Preamble, Preamble ... I was going to use a BearMountain post I made, to answer a question here and it looks like the site is no longer functional. So I am posting the original from 2015 here to add to the DIY collection and have it available for...

    Cutting Weight

On one trip with a particularly long portage, I decide I needed to really take a good look at what I was taking and what it cost me in weight. My wife helped me, I took out every piece of routine gear, weighed it and she recorded all of the data. Put that into a spreadsheet and took a good...

    A Raven from Scratch

Personally, with all the stuff you need to get done, I would be inclined to suspend that seat and bounce in it a bit, if holds, it holds ,,, if it creaks or cracks, you know it is something you need to do ... otherwise you have lots to keep you busy. Maybe figure a way to "fasten" instead epoxy...
