    What "is" a Canoe?

In Florida they call these "sit on top kayaks." Why people use them among the alligators I have no idea. But they do.

    Breaking up Freeze-dried Packages

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we ended up with a lot of 2-person freeze-dried dinners. I am going to use them on this summer's trip, which will be solo. I add to my dinners optional fruit leather, bits of chocolate. I don't think I can eat a whole two person freeze-dried meal. That...

    Rack Repair, and rant

I’ve had the same problem. Change vehicles and all of a sudden all new rack equipment is needed. I’ve got a bunch of good towers, etc., hanging around somewhere from several vehicle changes. It has occurred to me to offer them here. Next time I see them, I will.

Help me understand downloadable maps, please

Thank you, Ralph. I’ll see what I can do. Ok. I get it now. Navigation through the maps is by zooming in and out. And once in a block of maps, I can move seamlessly through them. When I hit the little squares, I’ve run out of the saved maps. And the downloaded maps are in the app, accessible...

Help me understand downloadable maps, please

I followed your instructions. I can get through downloading the maps. I downloaded 9 maps around Gull Bay, ON. Where do I find these downloaded maps? I tried clicking on the icons along the bottom, but that does not seem to help. In fact, I am now stuck in one and can’t get back to the maps...

The Appeal of a Long Wilderness Trip?

I’ve done a number of month-long, remote trips. Everything Alan said. Everything PaddlingPitt said. Basically, it takes me three days on the water for the shake down, and then by day 12 there is a noticeable change in my state of consciousness. It is that precious state of consciousness I seek.

Help me understand downloadable maps, please

Thank you, recped and Ralph. I am thinking Cal Topo is beyond my level at this point, even with the kind instructions. Ralph, I am working my way through your instructions. Thank you. For everyone, it's like reading in a foreign language, what you all are writing. Even if I know the...

    Luxuries for a broke back

I found the name of the company that sells lightweight sylnyl tarps: Etowah Gear Etowah Gear Tabs are sewn in. Bag with toggle tie attached. Seems very good quality for much, much less than other places. There are some very lightweight titanium stakes now so you can take a few extra stakes...

Help me understand downloadable maps, please

Thank you for all the suggestions. Ralph, it turns out I have Topo Maps Canada on my phone…must be from some previous attempt at understanding these things. So, i open the app, I get the base map and navigated to Lake Nipigon, ON, and randomly selected Gull Bay. I selected to download the Gull...

    The dreaded 'Slidies'

I use various bags, boots, Pfd, etc to level up the floor or brace my back or feet. Usually works.

Help me understand downloadable maps, please

Here is the context: I have a trip planned for this summer in Canada and have purchased all the paper maps. No problem there. But, I want to have a Plan B trip in reserve. I don’t want to invest in maps for Plan B especially because that could change depending on fires. So, should I have to...

    Missinaibi River

I was looking at Woodland Caribou. There have been many fires over the past few years resulting in blackened camping areas and portage trails with many downed partially burned trees. The recommendation was to skip Woodland Caribou unless you were planning on a very rough trip.

    north east storms

I’m headed up to Vermont for a family reunion. I had a reservation at a riverside inn. Then my cousin arranged for me to stay at an Airbnb closer to town, so I canceled the inn reservation. My cousin emailed last night that the inn washed away into the river!

    Luxuries for a broke back

I like this set up: It uses a CCS tarp, but you can also make your own. This is by Hoop_ if you know him from another forum. I think this answers your question. Minimum number would be this set up. I’ve found it works well even in storms.
