    Paddling in a lightning storm

You know the advice given to golfers caught out on the course in an electrical storm? Quickly grab a 2-iron and hold it aloft as it is well known that not even God can hit a 2-iron.

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

Nice accident reconstruction, recped. Sounds quite plausible.

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

He does say that. I think he meant he swam to shore with the canoe. His comments in a reply on YouTube says his dad had the paddles.

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

Another good catch. You are right. None visible. If you go to YouTube and read the comments, he says his dad had both paddles on the island.

I certainly did not pick at that up!

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

That's an excellent point and may explain why the guy wasn't able to make a rescue attempt himself. Also, not being there, it's hard to tell just how significant the upstream rapids were. I know that stuff that looks big and bouncy when you go down through it often looks pretty tame when...

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

I'm sure they were both shell-shocked and not thinking clearly. Swimming in cold water will do that to you if you are unprepared. But I agree that with the benefit of hindsight, an experienced canoeist should have been able to make a front ferry over to the dad. This is most visible at 2:42...

Should you have to pay the costs of a rescue?

I just ran across a video of a guy and his dad in the Boundary Waters who had to use their spot to be rescued this past May (2022). As best I can tell, the 2 men (father and adult son who narrates the video and claims they are experienced canoeists) were portaging around some rapids. Before...

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

According to the Wikipedia article regarding fatalities, you are right. But according to the article you posted some of the injuries were while canoeing per this chart. https://www.wemjournal.org/article/S1080-6032(05)70375-6/fulltext The Skiing/Canoeing category is presumably water sking or...

    Ranting

A couple of thoughts. 1. A friend once said to me "the more stuff you own, the more it owns you." Not sure if that's an original thought or something he borrowed from somewhere, but I think it's right. Having a lot of possessions ties you down and makes it hard to move or move on when you...

I paddled the length of Chesuncook over 2 days when it was an absolute sheet of glass. I may be the ONLY person to have ever done so.

Poll: How much is your spouse or SO interested in canoeing compared to you?

I can't accurately fill in the poll because negative infinity isn't one of the options. When I finished building my cedar stripper she announced she would "never set foot in that effing canoe." Only she didn't say effing.

    Tobogganing Turtles

Last Sunday I watched a large painted turtle take a deliberate 15-20 foot swan dive (turtle dive?) off the top of Violette's Lock on the C&O canal.
