It does look like some kind of generic mahogany that I’ve gotten in the past. Jim

A Short BWCA trip, with a stripper, Cedar that is

Another fan of Canoe Country Outfitters, they are the real deal and they have free showers when you get off the water in case you are not staying the night. Nothing wrong with that trip Jim. Jim

    Hatchet or Saw?

Is that a Snow and Neely axe? Jim

An interview with Garrett Conover, woodsman, author, wilderness canoeist guide.

A couple weeks ago I toured both Rollin and Jerry’s shops it was a great afternoon. Jerry has molds for about 18 different canoes and a couple dinghys if I counted correctly. Jim

Is it from a local source or did it come from away? That might help. I can’t help from that pic, but if you can take a closeup of the end of the board. Ideally plane a section of the end so you can get a good view of the growth rings. I might be able to find it in a book I have. Jim

    Photo of the day

Gadabyte, that pic is a perfect mirror. Not a ripple on the water. Jim

How do you revarnish the the inside of the hull on a W/C canoe?

If you get a good coat on the first one I would still use the Scotchbrite pad before the second coat. I have seen too many varnish failures where the layers peel off from the gloss. A quick wipe with the pad doesn’t take long and since it dulls the surface you can see where you are varnishing. Jim

How do you revarnish the the inside of the hull on a W/C canoe?

That looks good. A light sanding or even just a maroon Scotchbrite pad to dull the surface. If it was me I would sand with 220 then a quick going over with the Scotchbrite pad, dampen a rag with thinner to wipe after the vacuum in leu of a tack cloth. Do one or two rib and plank bays at a time...

    Leaving firewood at camp

I have always left firewood, I was taught that by my mentor as a courtesy for the next people at the site. Who knows they may be in distress and need to build a fire quickly. As for tossing processed wood into the brush I have no guesses. Jim

    Drawknife sharpening

You’re welcome Pat. If there is one group likely to use a drawknife it’s the boatbuilders. Jim

    Drawknife sharpening

Not sure I follow you method but there are many ways to do a job that’s for sure. This jig with the discs would handle all your drawknives, it does all of mine. I developed a different jig for spoke shave blades and it works for everything from slicks to little thumb plane blades. I’m still...

    Drawknife sharpening

True words Glenn. My next project for the assembly is some sort of paddle carving station. Those picnic tables were poor at best, so much movement. Plus I have a cheery paddle blank so I have a project to test it out, not to mention sharp drawknives. Jim

    Drawknife sharpening

Thanks Rick. It’s just a simple clamp. One leg of an aluminum angle was cut down. The carriage is shorter than the abrasive plate so there is a clamping action. A happy accident was that the edge of the angle holding the plate is tipped up a bit (sorry no pic) so the edge of the drawknife...

    Drawknife sharpening

When I was at the Wooden Canoe Assembly I met Robert from the Chocorua, NH chapter and he had made a jig for holding a drawknife to make sharpening easier and more accurate. We had quite a brainstorming session and continued with phone conversations after the assembly. I loved the idea as a lot...

We were showing some guests around the mid coast area and stopped in a gallery in Camden, on the way out of the door I saw this so thought I would share. I like it but not enough to buy it. Jim

Show us pictures of your canoe dogs

Went out paddling with some kayak friends today and it was the first time we had our dog in a canoe since we adopted him. He did real well. His real love is walks in the woods no mater the weather. Jim
