One thing I will never do again is . . .

Harrison Brook area: Lake Lila is off the map to the bottom, my erroneous path to and through Harrison Brook bog is in red, turnoff on Rainer Creek to the proper carry landing is in green, the actual carry along the railway right of way and through woods to Clear Pond is in yellow. Clear Pond...

One thing I will never do again is . . .

Pictures don't really do it justice... but here are a few. The pleasant paddle up Harrison Brook prior to the drag. In the thick of the bog. Some of the channels were quite narrow, but waist deep! (sorry about the vertically oriented photo showing as horizontal here): Typical channel; too...

One thing I will never do again is . . .

Haha! I will never again drag my canoe through the seemingly endless bog of upper Harrington Brook because I missed the turn onto Rainer Creek between Lake Lila and Clear Pond; Whitney Wilderness, ADKs.

Headwaters Canoe shares nice article about wooden canoe builders

Thanks for posting. Enjoyable reading and pictures to study for wood/canvas canoeists!

    New project... 17.5' Atkinson Traveler

I'm going for the marathon length build record on this one... Actually, I got focused on really diving into the restoration of the early Chestnut Bobs Special. I did finish all the repairs and got her into canvas in mid-October 2023 and will prime, paint, and complete that canoe when weather...

    Lows Lower Dam Access

Bill, I have the notion that the Horseshoe outlet stream would be mostly navigable under normal water levels, but my understanding is that the level has been lowered while construction is ongoing at the lower dam. If one can believe the Google Earth measuring feature, the narrowest channels of...

    Lows Lower Dam Access

Thank you. I located this today from Adirondack Explorer: bog-river-access-road-closed Here's the relevant part: The state Department of Environmental Conservation is offering alternative access points to the Bog River. One is the Horseshoe Lake outlet, which is accessible .4 miles past the...

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

Oops, egg on my face! Still, odd place to find it. The nearest road is a kilometer away by my guess. Or one hell of a discus toss from the Adirondack Railway about a hundred meters away…

Finds, Relics, and Evidence from The Past

Logging era machine part found while bushwhacking north of Harrington Pond/Brook, north of Rainer Creek, having missed the turnoff for the carry to Clear Pond from Lake Lila, Adirondacks. Presumably, this boggy area was at one time flooded so logs could be floated to Lake Lila. I imagine this...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Oops, windy day today; tail end of the recent storm I guess. Rain softened soil and gusty winds today brought this down. It's a Spruce of some variety, with lots of Ivy climbing the tree as well. Maybe I can salvage some w/c canoe parts from it!! Gotta look on the bright side!

Stay safe in this big storm ...

Wind from the south (rare for us) caused a live 80' White Pine on the edge of our property to fall on our neighbor's home. Apparently punched holes in their roof from the branches since only the top 20' of the tree hit the roof. I offered to clean the bulk of the branches off the home during...

    Lows Lower Dam Access

Thank you. Google Earth seems to show some sort of structure on the lake side of the tracks; presumably a kiosk.

    Litter, garbage and trash

Only encountered trash at one campsite on Little Long Pond in the St. Regis Canoe Area. The site on Clamshell Pond had a couple of tarps left behind, but they were neatly folded and stashed away from the main site. I could do, however, with fewer fireplace grilles... lots of sites have many of...

    Lows Lower Dam Access

Is anyone aware if it's feasible to access the Bog River Flow downstream of Hitchens Pond via the ADK Scenic Railway from Horseshoe Lake? It is about a 1.5 mile carry from Horseshoe Lake to the bridge over the Bog River flow. I would like to paddle the counterclockwise route to Tupper Lake...

Time to make a new paddle

Thanks Mem, I just cut off the excess canvas at the inwale today. I'm excited for warm weather for primer, paint, outwales, and stem bands.

A nice song we can all relate to

Thanks Robin. That song reminds me of the "talking" ballads style of the 60's folk crowd like Tom Paxton, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Jaime Brockett (Legend of the USS Titanic).
