Largest Lakes, Greatest Depths, and Other Watery Data

I have paddled on the Great Salt Lake a few times, usually in my sea kayak. It has good views of the Wasatch mountains to the east, but the closeup shoreline views are pretty non descript. It is very shallow and is receding rapidly, leaving wide salt flats along a lot of the shore. The high...

Trip Reports and Performance Review of B.N. Morris Wood-Canvas Canoe

Thanks Glenn. I enjoyed the writeup and photos very much. I somehow missed most of those paddling destinations during the 13 years I lived in Connecticut in the 70’s and 80’s. Still a beautiful area-especially at this time of year! 🛶

    I Can't Lift/Transport My Morris Canoe! . . . or can I?

You could trade the sedan for a pickup truck and get a cheap bed extender which goes in the trailer hitch. Very easy to get the canoe off of the cart and into the bed of the truck. I have transported various size canoes and sea kayaks (up to 18.5') this way. Just remember a red flag on back.

Grommets for grab loops on a MR Kevlar courier

Ours is 58” from the front endcap to the front of the front thwart and 94” to the front of the seat. Your 59” to center of the thwart looks about right. ( The thwart is 2” wide at the center.) The PO also installed a kneeling thwart 4” behind the front one. Paddles great in either direction.

Input request for a lightweight mostly solo fishing canoe

If you can find a Mad River Malecite from the 1980’s or 90’s it would be ideal. I am your exact size, but probably older, and really enjoy paddling my Malecite rescue solo, tandem and poling. Good luck.

Grommets for grab loops on a MR Kevlar courier

Glad to see another Courier rescued. What year is yours? My son has a 4/94 Kevlar Courier which he found in near pristine condition a couple of years ago. It appears to be stock. If you need any measurements or have other questions I will be happy to help.

Paddling a solo canoe with a Greenland style paddle?

This thread got me curious so I took my Greenland paddle and tried it with my MR Indy. I had never used a kayak paddle, GP or Euro in a canoe, but I greatly prefer a GP when sea kayaking. The paddle drip wasn’t as bad as I expected when paddling fast. The velocity of the blade in the air...

Refurbing a Mad River kevlar 49

The Watco Teak is also what I now use. They make a Watco “Danish” which looks nice on sanded ash rails, but I discovered that it is for interior use only. I should have read the label on the can years ago! Watco Teak is very liquid and I don’t think it needs to be thinned. I actually enjoy...

Refurbing a Mad River kevlar 49

Congrats on a nice find. The bird crap and dust must have preserved it well- it looked better than the one I bought in New Mexico a few years ago before you started on it. Mine had some kind of dry rot on the surface of the gunwhales and took a lot of sanding to get to the condition of yours...

Couldn't Resist: 15' B.N. Morris Customized Reproduction by Rollin Thurlow in As-New Condition

We have also experienced drought related problems with river/lake water access here in the west. I have had good luck using the little two wheel cart which I had purchased years ago to transport my sea kayak. It straps onto the stern of any of my canoes (solo or tandem) and lets me pull them...

    Arthritis is Handy

Some arthritis, believe it or not, can be caused by eating vegetables in the nightshade family, such as tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. It may be worth experimenting with your diet. My brother and my wife both had dramatic reduction in symptoms by cutting way back or eliminating these foods...

Mad River canoes no longer being produced

I totally concur with SouhernKevlar and pb. As a former MR dealer I was stunned and dismayed when I saw the quality of the products that they were turning out after leaving Vermont. I still enjoy my vintage craft from the 80’s and 90’s very much and will be passing them on to my children and...

    Tilley Hats

I have been wearing Tilley hats for about 40 years and was disappointed when they stopped making the classic white cotton ones a while ago. I didn’t like the synthetic ones which took their place. I was happy to find a new one couple of months ago with the same cotton (the Wanderer model). I...

What was the worst canoe you ever owned or paddled?

Sawyer Sawyerlex with an inverted keel. I was a new canoe shop owner in Connecticut in the early 1980’s and had just taken on the Sawyer line. I bought into their advertising claims about a tough, Royalex canoe with a “patent pending” inverted keel for whitewater use and ordered one. My...

    Sawyer Summersong on Green River?

That should be a more comfortable boat for your trip and allow you to carry 10 days worth of fresh water rather than having to settle and filter the silty river water. The last time that I paddled this section of the Green I soloed in my Kevlar Explorer and enjoyed the room vs the Summersong...

Aluminum pool cleaning collapsible handle for "poling" a canoe ? Thoughts?

I have an expandable aluminum pool cleaning pole with a friction adjuster. I would never trust it to hold under the pressure exerted while poling. if the friction sleeve were to slip while poling hard the result could (and probably would) be catastrophic!

    Sawyer Summersong on Green River?

I think that it depends on several factors, including your weight and what you will do for water. I assume that you are planning on the Green River to the confluence with the Colorado section-(Labyrinth/Stillwater Canyons)not Desolation Canyon with its many Class 2-3 rapids. I would never take...

Wag Bag Toilet System (long and scatological)

In addition to the wag bag bucket we, at the request of the females in the group, also take a bright yellow “sunshine” bucket for them to pee in. It is emptied into the river after breaking camp. This lets them avoid having to wade out into the river when it is cold or dark. Woodpuppy- the...
