Digestive changes while on the trail

I feel kinda bad about all that DNA I've left in the wild places.

    Allagash River

It all changed when they banned the log drives and the roads came in.. The odd thing is that the advocates for roads, atv and snowmobile travel etc. pitch it as "traditional" use. I'm told there is a fairly serious push for a National Park. There will be political compromises made. I often...

    Allagash River

Great trip report and photos. I've paddled the Allagash from Chamberlain Bridge so many times I've lost count. I love that trip. I've paddled in many places more remote, but I think the Allagash is my favorite of all canoe trips. The Allagash was my first trip and I will be very happy and...

Digestive changes while on the trail

I tend to have the exact opposite experience. I'll spare you the details. But its not real comfortable I'll tell you that much. My experience is that we actually tend to have a fairly high fat diet on trips. I have no gallbladder. The result is predictable.

    Allagash River in July

Get yourself a Maine Gazetteer available in almost every little store in Maine including gas station food marts. (see link below to Walmart). This is all you need for maps in Maine. We use the gazetteer as our only map on almost every trip we go on in Maine. I could read the thing for hours and...

    Bear Attack?

No Title Folding stock stainless 12 gauge works pretty good. Of course, if you ever actually have to destroy a barren land grizzly bear you are going to have a long exit interview at the RCMP office in Yellowknife and a lot of explaining to do.

    Allagash River in July

By two key he means that you drive to the put in and hire norm to drive your car to the take out. I have done this many times. If you are coming from the south it saves time. Not sure about water levels on the Bonaventure but that time of year could pose problems there as well. That is a...

    Bear Attack?

Thankfully the risk of such an attack is very low. I tell my wife that I am in more danger driving to work and back every day on the interstate highway. Not sure I'm right about that. But that's my story and I am sticking to it. Safe habits are your best defense. Eat and then move to camp in...

    What is your greatest fear?

Grizzly bears. You can do everything right. Take all the precautions. Eat and then move down river to sleep. Still - they are in charge and if the stars are aligned in a bad way you are toast. Fortunately the chances of having a problem are extremely low. Still, I never sleep well when there...

    Allagash River in July

It was under 1000 on the 24th and then Sweeper hit it at a high point because of a LOT of rain. It is dropping very fast now. Looking like it will be at or below 1000 in about 2-3 days and heading south fast from there unless there is more rain. Check the water levels carefully the day before...

    Allagash River in July

For what its worth I will chime in and vote in favor of Royalex depending on your skill level. Norm gives that advice because he has seen countless people every year tear up their Kevlar boats in low water on the Allagash. He knows what he is talking about. What you are going to see on this trip...

No Title That's how I did it - emptied my retirement account! Got to get your priorities straight. :( For that particular river I do not know a cheap way. There might be a way if you had all summer. Need to get yourself and a boat and gear to Horton Lake not far from Great Bear Lake. Its about...

    Need help with Canoe ID

I am not familiar with that brand. Looking at the pictures it appears like a relatively inexpensive fiberglass canoe made from chopped fiberglass which is not particularly durable. But, if you are using it for ponds and quiet water I am sure it would be great. I would offer him less and see what...

    Che-Mun (RIP)

Ahh yes. Time and money. Those are the issues for these trips. Also age. Most of the folks that are heavily involved are teachers. They have the time for a summer long trip. Money is still an issue for most of them but they find a way. When you have the time there are ways to cut the...

    Che-Mun (RIP)

Sadly, the Journal of Canadian Wilderness Paddling - (Che-Mun) has published its final outfit. For those of you who spend time paddling in the far north of Canada this wonderful journal has been an excellent source of information and stories about the adventures of fellow paddlers. It was a...
