Old Town Tripper XL - Fair Price range?

I think for certain things it is hard to beat royalex and it is very sad that it is off the market. I've owned many royalex, some wood canvas and some composite in my life. Now I'm down to one old 17' tripper. Soon I expect I'll also have this 20' tripper. I think of these trippers in the same...

Old Town Tripper XL - Fair Price range?

I just got a not from my go to shuttle guy in northern maine. He tells me that Tripper XLs are like gold up there. $1000 for decent shape XL's is the going rate. I think the outfitter like them because they hold up to the shallow Allagash water and people tend to stay upright in them. They...

Old Town Tripper XL - Fair Price range?

Do you find that the various older royalex tripping boats (Old Town Tripper, Nova Craft Prospector, etc.) are increasing in value since royalex is gone? Not long ago the going rate for used 17' trippers in decent to great shape was around $500 at the low end to $750 on the high end. US dollars...

Old Town Tripper XL - Fair Price range?

I'm considering purchasing an Old Town Tripper XL - mostly for tripping in style so to speak on Allagash, Penobscot, St. John type waterways with no portages and some whitewater. I know the boat well and I have paddled them and been surprised by how nimble they are in whitewater wiht a load...

    Question: Never Boat Alone

I've paddled alone a lot on day jaunts but never on a trip. I like being with people. I think its more fun. It's definitely safer. But, I totally respect my friends who enjoy solo trips. It's just not for me.

    Long Johns

I love my Ullfrotte or Woolpower - light or medium weight depending on the situation. Great stuff. Like putting on a personal furnace.

    My newish Fast Bucksaw

I have this same saw. I've been very happy with it. I need to replace the shock cord which has lost it elasticity after years of use and abuse. I recommend using peg tooth blades (no raker teeth - just cutting teeth) for our dry wood use. They make a big difference as far as speed of cut. I...

Thanks for this post. I'm hopping right on this. I've rented a few of these Novacraft Prospectors and I like them a lot.

SOLD CCS Lean 3 for sale

It is an excellent dining tarp. When we paddle up north we tend to set the Lean down wind from the tents and use it as a group eating and bug free zone. I like this better than a tarp because it has sides and keeps you dry in the rain. The front has screen but also can be buttoned up with the...

SOLD CCS Lean 3 for sale

This item is SOLD. My CCS Lean 3 is for sale. I purchased it last season new from Cooke Custom Sewing. It comes with an attached ridge line and the CCS custom stuff sack. The color is white. It is in excellent condition. I used it on one two week trip. I washed it at the end of the trip and it...

1947 Guided Allagash River Canoe Trip

There has not been a house at long lake dam that I can recall since my first trip in 1980. The house looks exactly like the house on Chamberlain at lock dam. I have a feeling thought that there may well have been a house at long lake dam back then. Not sure. Some of that movie is pretty hard...

1947 Guided Allagash River Canoe Trip

That fish kill at the falls was obscene by today's standards. One year there was a deer with a malformed set of antlers on Pillsbury Island that would come into the campsites to visit. The staff, (or maybe visitors), were feeding it I suspect. They gave it a name - can't remember right now -...

Video: Keewaydin Traditional Travelling by Cedar Canvas Canoe in Wabakimi

My paddling partner on the Wind trip had never seen moving water. I don't think his 71 year old knees liked it much, but even he remarked how much more stable and in control he felt when I ordered him to his knees. I'm so used to it I often forget and stay that way even after we get through a...

Video: Keewaydin Traditional Travelling by Cedar Canvas Canoe in Wabakimi

Great program at Keewaydin. They really know how to do it right. I just wish they would get on their knees a little more! But, they are kids having a blast in a safe environment and learning stuff that will stay with them all their lives.

    Wind/Peel Rivers - Yukon

People have a right to earn a decent living. Its all about supply and demand. Just like everywhere else. If you hire a friend to drive you to and from Mayo and he get hurt or sick - what the heck do you do then? Part of the price you pay at KP or Up Yours is for peace of mind.

    Wind/Peel Rivers - Yukon

They were good. Not cheap. But reliable. Its hard when you are coming into a strange town from so far away. Now that I have made some friends in Whitehorse I expect I could shave a few bucks off the total cost of the trip. But the big cost is the float plane and I don't know that will change...
