    Simple Checklist

I once had lists galore. Now I get up early the day I am leaving and throw a bunch of gear etc in the truck and go. I always forget something.

    Age-related risk aversion

This is so true and especially in canoeing. I believe that many many people who start out in canoeing understandably do not have a clue about many of the very serious risks must of which can be well controlled - but not if you don't perceive the risk. Two folks were pulled off Lake Champlain...

Most difficult rescues you have done?

I was trained to stay off the river in this situation. I have never violated this rule. Sometimes the best "rescue" is recognizing that even though you've been waiting to paddle a river for weeks or months and traveled for a day to get there the river is unsafe...

    Age-related risk aversion

My feeling is that I owe it to my wife and my kids and my grandchildren, all of whom for some unknown reason seem to love me and want me to continue to be part of their lives, to do what I can to reduce the risks associated with my canoe tripping. So I carry a plb and when I am in grizzly or...

    cover tarp

The only thing about a fitted cover for outdoor storage is that you probably want to be sure that you have ventilation. Otherwise you might have mildew problems etc. Wind and tarps don't mix well. It can be done. Needs to be taught and sturdy.

    Tumplines

To each his own. I have good friend who loves to take a solo trip now and again. I've tried it. I find it makes me "live on the inside" too much as Iris Dement would say. If I have a special moment, (like the time we drifted around a bend and found ourselves in the middle of a scene with an...

    Tumplines

That piece with all the links is great. I had seen all of the links except the popular mechanics pdf listed near the bottom. Thanks for posting that. New school v. old school. The debate will never end. But I agree - its not about your gear. Its about what you do when you are out there and...

    Headwaters Canoe

Its really nice of them to send these pics. Makes me feel a part of the process even though I have not clinched a single tack. They have been wonderful to work with. They advocate for babiche seats. I ordered hand caned seats which they also do. They feel babiche is more durable. I'm wavering.

First trip in a new canoe tips

This thread strikes a chord with me because I will be taking my first trip in a new canoe in late May. I don't even have the canoe yet but I am expecting to have it in early May. It takes a bit to get used to a new canoe. Only way is to paddle it as much as possible. If you are lucky you...
