    Peterborough Litelift restoration

I finally got this project back into my tiny shop. I removed the shear planks on one side and the rib end damage is further down than I anticipated on some, but still better than replacing full ribs. A couple cant ribs will need replaced also. At some point, the shear planking was replaced and...

    How much epoxy?

Thank you all, much appreciated. Jim- sadly I don’t think I will build another strip canoe. I didn’t enjoy the construction process. Being my first strip canoe, I am sure the next one would go smoother, but I prefer other construction methods. That said, all of the “how to” posts from the...

    How much epoxy?

Thanks Alan. Do you prefer their thin, medium, or thick resin? Bob

    How much epoxy?

Question for the stripper builders. I have been building my daughter a 14’ long 28” wide strip canoe. It is ready for glass. I was thinking of Raka or MAS epoxy to keep cost down. Any preferences? More importantly, how much epoxy to fill 4oz cloth on the outside? Should I expect the same on...

Fly rod and Rod tube winter project

Beautiful rod case! Well done. I believe all new and older rod materials are relevant and specific to your style and type of fishing. Bamboo and glass rods are heavier and require a slower casting style, but that can be preferable when throwing small delicate flies. I also like the aesthetic...

    Barbless hooks

I always pinch the barbs down. It does make unhooking them very easy and does less damage to the fish’s mouth from my experience. I mostly fly fish, but when using top water plugs/poppers I will take off the front treble hook (if there is one) to help with line tangles and multiple hooks in a...

    Drying the inside of flotation?

I have had good luck with rinsing sealed systems (tubing and fluid bags) with isopropyl alcohol. The residual alcohol left will evaporate if you can keep the valve open. I have not used this in your exact application, but it should work. Bob

What tape for temp coverage of peeled paint on W/C canoe?

Gaff tape from the theater/production world come in many colors, but I think it would be a mistake. It hardens with age and leaves a nasty yellow residue when removed after a while. Like you said, more paint would come off. There will be more rocks in your future. I would buy the paint. Bob

    How did you know?

I just had this conversation with my older former tripping companion. He said “At some point it just became too hard and the amount of energy it took wasn’t worth it.” He is 82 now and our last trip was 5 years ago. I hope I get that many years of adventures. Bob

    Paddling with carpal tunnel syndrome

Yes. I have been dealing with it for 25 years. My hands will ache, fall asleep, and lose feeling with any repetitive motion. I need to get the release surgery done, but I have been putting it off mostly because I’m stubborn and I have found effective work arounds. If I am able to change my...
