NFCT - Forked Lake to Permanent Rapids

It's 15 1/2', not 17. Just back to cell service in Saranac Lake. Rivertrail Beer works. Back to Sunday, trail work till 10:00 and then 20 miles paddling Long Lake to site at top of Racquet Falls at 5:00. Up at 7:00 to double portage 1.3 miles to to put in, down river to Stoney Creek and ponds...

NFCT - Forked Lake to Permanent Rapids

I think it 17'. I'll confirm - he's out paddling it now on Forked Lake. It's the builders first ever boat build. A year and a half. Ever other strip is screwed to every rib. My quick math said I get a 1000 screws. I believe he was in the last 90 miler. Meanwhile, we cleared some portages...

NFCT - Forked Lake to Permanent Rapids

Arrived. 4 volunteers, 3 interns, and 1 staff. Camping in an old quarry. Great chicken curry dinner. Will split crew on Buttermilk Falls portage (I can't bring myself to call them carries with my BWCA and Quetico experienced) and the Deerland carry, which I know needed help from last year. One...

NFCT - Forked Lake to Permanent Rapids

I'm heading out in a few hours. Meet at Forked Lake Campground for NFCT work weekend, then hit the trail on Sunday. Hope to get to Permanent Rapids Thursday +/- a day, for another NFCT work weekend. My tenth. I will add to this "report" on days I have cell service. Last year I did much of same...

    solar charger for phone

I have the one pictured - 3 solar panels the size pictured - and a small power bank - will probably just take it. 10 years old so I thought I could do better. It got me through last year's trip just fine. Review...

    solar charger for phone

I find it necessary to take my phone (and zoleo) on a canoe trip and wondering if the small solar chargers/power banks are worth it. Looking at this one on Amazon: https://a.co/d/00ziQI50

As stable as a Camper but lighter

Do you feel kevlar is not tough enough? It's surprisingly tough and not hard to patch. Lots of options from 30 to 35 pounds.

    Help with a canoe cart

This causes me to tell the story of my trip last year, which included the Racquet Falls portage. Late afternoon - when I usually try to avoid long portages - and it's isn't really very wheelable IMHO. There was an off duty ranger - I think she was from Indian Lake - and she helped me down the...

    Swift Detachable Yoke

Not there in early production. They had a clamp on but to get it to grip they put a heavy textured tape on it. All confirmed with Bill Swift. It works ok. I have the carbon fiber yoke.

    Help with a canoe cart

Just saw this thread. Hope I'm not repeating but I have same cart as OP. In user his "4 corners" method but just one suspenze cam strap on each side, and double wrap it around thwarts. Works well. Somewhere I read carry and extra nut for the wheel. Haven't needed it yet but can see how it could...

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

As far as proximity, I was on Gabbro some years ago and could clearly hear the test drilling. It was almost loud.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

I love New Mexico. Did a lot of work there in 1990s through 2010s. My retirement plan was summer in Ely and winter in NM. My wife had other plans. The culture and history of NM, the variety of mountains to desert, all wonderful.

    Wabakimi is the Plan

Picture in one of Kevin Callen's books of home portaging through Toronto train station. He said the stairs were hard. I looked at a wabakimi project map at canoecopia that had a lot of flag stops on it through the park.
