Hi folks,

I need to put some lining holes in a Royalex Rockstar.

I am in the Rochester, NY area - no luck with the shops here. Mountain Man in Old Forge won't do it either - suggested I send it to Northstar.

Any leads on a shop where I can have this done, preferably in my general area? I will drive if need be.

Thank you.

I know John Visser of Housatonic Canoe Shop is a couple hours from you in Little Falls, NY. He primarily works on wood and canvas, but I know he dabbles in the dark arts of Royalex from time to time. Worth a call or email I’d say. He does nice work.

drill holes a fraction smaller than the cordage you'll use. No seepage.....

So, no PVC being used to create a pathway for the rope tom pass through?

Pic by any chance?

Thank you all, and Cheese, thank you for John's number.

It depends on how low you want the holes. If it's below the waterline like billconners example shows, then yes you'll have to glue in pvc or abs pipe.

I have no idea about high or low, but seems like low would give you a distinct advantage, being able to "lift" further away from canoe.

Low really helps when the canoe starts to broach while lining. Having the pick point close to the waterline lowers the moment arm, resulting in a "skid" rather than a rolling motion.

I used carbon fiber tube, and on the inside just wrapped the tube with carbon tow up against the inner hull on both sides and wet it out with epoxy. No leak, super strong. I may have a picture, I’ll have to look.

Lining holes don't go below the waterline, but just above. Still, there is some risk of in-seepage from wave splash. That probably would be minimal with a tight-fitted rope even with no connecting tube.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I'm sure Dave Curtis at Hemlock Canoe in Hemlock, NY, could do it if he had time and wanted the job.
