Versatility of a tandems as a solo

I have had solo and tandem canoes, and I prefer the tandems for their versatility and stability. I fish from mine a lot including fly fishing. I also like to carry extra gear for camping, bushcrafting, collecting driftwood, etc that I may not be able to do as well in a solo. That being said...

Late, slow and unprepared paddling companions – A rant

That was a fun read :) I do 99% solo so I don't know the anguish of group canoe tripping, but have had similar experiences during my time in a local Jeep club. From one guy being stupidly late to the trail head because he stopped for an oil change on the way, to another guy showing up for a 3...

A great mother day weekend on the water!!

Looks like a great outing! It's awesome that your daughter is into it too. I took the weekend off paddling to do the mother's day thing :)

Beautiful dog JagDaddy! The scenarios you described above are precisely why I want to go in with eyes wide open.

Widgeon Creek & Marsh / Pitt Lake

Thanks for the comments guys. Yes, definitely a beautiful area with more wildlife than you can shake a stick at. Fortunately I did not have to shake a stick at his guy. Black bears are the least of my worries. It's the big cats I fear the most. Nasty buggers.

Widgeon Creek & Marsh / Pitt Lake

This is a well known paddling route off Pitt lake. Technically it is a tributary of the lower Pitt river, but as it is literally at the mouth of the lake, most people regard the entrance as being on Pitt lake. Anyway, I prefer to get into the quiet areas where people don't go as this is a...

    Greetings from the Okanagan BC

Welcome, this is a great site. There is a guy in Barriere who advertises on Craigslist all the time. I think he finds small boats that need some TLC and refurbishes them. I have seen him post several canoes over the past 6 months or so. May be worth checking it out. If you can't find him on the...

    PFD For Dogs?

More great tips! Very much appreciated! Yes, Rikki is a handsome young fellow - Papas' little chick magnet  Once we were walking through a park with him and I noticed a group of young women walking a short distance from us. I said to my wife..."watch this". I launched his ball so that...

    Minesing Wetlands day trip

That looks like a cool place to paddle. One of the things I like about canoes is getting into the diverse waterways. It's not always a typical lake or a typical river like it is with a power boat. Something different is always nice.

    PFD For Dogs?

That's awesome! They are great little dogs - all the intelligence and stamina of the full-size Aussies in a much smaller package. Yours look very similar to our female - a red/blue merle. Does yours get bored in the canoe at all? This is also something I have been wondering about with ours. My...

    PFD For Dogs?

Very good tip there. My male is a hairy bugger, and every spring we have to rake all his undercoat out as he does not shed it properly. Heat is always a concern with him. We have a small kiddie pool at home that he likes to cool off in on warmer days, so it's fortunate that he loves the water. I...

    PFD For Dogs?

Makes sense to me. As a typical empty-nester, my dogs are like my new kids and I am very protective. One of my main concerns would be getting them back in the boat should they decide to take a shortcut to shore. Sailing is one of my great passions in life too.

    PFD For Dogs?

Good point there. I'll have to cobble something together for him. More great feedback! My dogs both run to me if they feel threatened, uneasy, scared etc. Rapids might freak him out a little, but I'll give hime lots of time to get comfortable riding with me before I make him do anything too...

    PFD For Dogs?

I am curious if anybody here trips with their canine. I have had it in my mind to try one of my dogs in the canoe. The male is generally game for whatever I am doing and loves the water. Yesterday I was taking a recreational paddle on a local river and my wife decided to surprise me with the...
