If I own a royalex canoe and wanted to make a stripper version of it how would I go about it? How do I efficiently make forms? I was thinking of making half, vertically split half patterns that I can use to lay out a starboard and port side full form pattern. Can you follow the idea? It would be pretty time consuming. Is there an easier way without sacrificing the royalex canoe?

What model is it? My first thought would be to see if you can find plans for it, or a similar boat, in woodstrip. But I suppose you've already looked. I follow where you're going with making half forms and then mirroring it. Sounds quite time consuming and I don't know how accurate it would be. I guess that would depend on your level of patience. Perhaps contact the designer and see if they'd be willing to supply/sell you form dimensions.

I picked up a Mohawk Challenger that the HIN tells me was made in 1994. I've only paddled it once and I liked the canoe quite a bit. I was thinking that it would be nice to have a lighter 14' solo canoe. Doesn't have to be a Challenger but it seemed pretty well behaved during my short, one hour, paddle. That's what got me thinking to make a stripper Challenger.

I started searching for plans but most of the solos I see are either 11-12 or 15-16. I guess I could try scaling an available plan but I don't know if that's a good idea or not.

I could try calling Mohawk and see what they say. That's a good idea, thank you.

Hanz,
The Kite that I just built is very comfortable. If Mr Momentum's curve template is not to your liking, that Kite, or the earlier version, the Osprey, might please you.
Either hull is a straight forward build, despite the crease.

BTW, Mr Momemtum, that template is too cool!!
And are you the result of I*alpha? Or are you a linear sort?

I do like that Kite you built - you are part of my problem! In a good way of course :)

I already have a 15' solo and there's times when it's a little too large. I'm thinking a 14' solo might be an ideal grab-n-go for the kind of paddling I most often do.

I spent about $600 to build that Kite, too much, I thought. I could have saved much $$ if I used wood gunnels.
Even so, where are you going to get a high performance, modern canoe for so little??

You know, you can swing by anytime and try out the hull. Maybe a detour on your way to an ADK trip...I'm only 10 minutes from I87.

Thank you for your kind offer. I am heading to the ADKs in September for sure and I'll be asking for help planning a trip. I just may be able to test paddle your Kite. I'm curious to see what I think. I'm a pretty green paddler and I test paddled a Swift Osprey before I bought my Swift Keewaydin 15. I remember liking the K15 so much more than the Osprey. I think the Osprey felt a bit squirrelly to me. I'm curious to see if my opinion has changed any after gaining some paddling experience.

I'd love to build a canoe for $600.00. I'm certain I can do it, I have most of the tools - I just need the space. I'll be contemplating my choices for sure.

Thanks again

Stripperguy, I have used templates like this for building pieces of furniture in the past. Quite helpful for determining odd radi, or matching something existing.
So, I guess I'm not quite a linear thinker. More outside the box :)
