Hello everyone,
I’m Rina Sen, and I’m thrilled to share my story with you on Medium. My journey from the quiet town of Khargone, nestled by the serene Narmada River, to becoming a national champion in canoe slalom, has been nothing short of transformative.
Growing up was all about simple joys and the gentle flow of the river. Never did I imagine that these early experiences would forge the path to my life’s greatest passion. Everything changed when I attended a national event in Maheshwar in 2019. Witnessing the thrill of canoe slalom, I felt a call to the water that I could not ignore. It was a spark that set me on a path less traveled.
Choosing sports over a secure job was daunting, especially in a community where such a path was uncommon. I faced initial resistance from my family, who worried about the uncertainties of a career in sports. However, I was determined to carve out my own destiny.
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unexpected challenges, but it also became a period of profound growth. With public facilities closed, I adapted by training at home, waking up at 4 AM to work on my strength and visualization techniques. My efforts bore fruit when I won my first national gold in 2022, a moment that turned skeptics into believers.
In November 2024, my journey took a significant turn as I joined the CRPF as a Head Constable, becoming the first Indian woman to enter through the avenue of canoe slalom. It was a historic moment, one that I hope inspires many young athletes, especially women, to pursue their dreams relentlessly.
But my story isn’t just about personal accolades. It’s about opening doors for those who will follow. I dream of raising awareness for canoe slalom in India and mentoring the next wave of champions. Sports taught me that the biggest barriers are the ones we place on ourselves, and every day on the water reinforces that belief.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m excited to continue breaking boundaries and paving the way for future athletes. Let’s keep paddling forward together!
