I got kicked out of a restaurant in Saranac one time for smelling too bad after ten days in the St. Regis. Went right across the street to a French bistro - where I was welcomed with open arms - and had one of the best meals I can remember. That French restaurant is still one of my favorites, and I make a point to go back (suitably groomed) every time I'm canoeing around there.
So, clearly, if there's only one good restaurant around, bring the soap; but if there are at least two you're probably good.
