Low 50's, sunny and calm yesterday. Not bad for January in Michigan.

The fisherpeople are out
Ice that is. 12 inches and climbing
The only use for a canoe woukd be as a pulk

Hmm, snapping a photo of Michigan paddling in January on placid liquid waters under a heavenly blue sky feels very much like cheating. Now ticking Grumpus off my Christmas card list. You may not get a cute little card in the mail from me but you do get a generous amount of respect. Wayda keep the paddle wet, eh?

This winter in NH the rivers are usually pretty solid by now, not so this year. I think I'll be able to get out every month this year if the weather keeps up the way it has been. Guess I'll have to get out sometime this month!

I'm packing for Florida canoeing. I guess I get wiped off your Christmas card list for eons!

Do they celebrate Christmas in warmer beachy climes? You know, with palm trees and unfrozen sand and open golf courses and bermuda shorts and piña coladas??
I need to travel more.
And relax my strict Christmas card code. lol

(Happy travels, and don't slip.)

In answer to Odyssey's question.....Unfortunately I had to spend Christmas in Florida this year to attend a memorial service for a deceased family member. No time for paddling. Did get a couple of walks in on the beach though!

We drove home from Florida New Years eve and on the long drive I was constantly monitoring the USGS river gauges for my local river as well as the weather forecast in hopes of making our annual New Years Day float. 2018 was a wash due to the fact that all of the area lakes/rivers were frozen solid....that usually doesn't occur until mid January. 2016 & 2017 were washed out due to monsoon like rains.....but a buddy and I did get out yesterday for the first float of the new year! The rivers were still blown out, but we were able to hit a local lake. We hit a little skim ice in some of the sheltered areas, but otherwise sunny and unseasonably warm!

Yes Happy New Year to you too sweeper. Low 40's today so took advantage and went up a different river.

Hey Odyssey, if the pics bother you just send me some good maple syrup and I'll stop. I think our little heat wave may be over soon anyway. Last year we had a flash freeze in December and both the local rivers I recently paddled were ice-covered coyote highways throughout January.

Cold front came in last night. Paddled 5 days in a row and pretty sure I've never done that in January before. Recent retirement helps.
