Can someone tell me what type of wood wood was used by chestnut on the bobs special for the outwales? it looks like cedar but feels harder.

Usually they are Spruce, however we have seen Ash. Here at the canoe shop we have been replacing them with Sitka Spruce, although it is expensive we can get it in long clear lengths every day. Finding long clear lengths of Eastern White Spruce is very difficult. Good luck with the Bob's!

I thought that they used soft wood for the inwales and hard wood for the outwales like white oak, mahogany, ash etc etc...

My Bobs Special- built 1970- has both white ash inwales and outwales. And i think Mike Elliott noted that usually Ash or Fir were used, though from experience I'm sure they used whatever was at hand from mid 70's on.
