    T-Satellite

The idea is exciting. My experience so far has been with the (newer) iPhone's native satellite functionality, and has been hit-or-miss. I May I was in Canada on a 14 day trip. Part of that was with others who also had iPhones with this capability. Some of us had 100% of messages go through...

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Neat thread. Cerberus is not only a world-class canoe dog, she is a stellar bird dog, and we typically do three trips to SD chasing pheasants and sharpies each year. This past year there were also a couple of waterfowl trips. She even helps recover deer from time to time. I bowhunt quite a...

    Quetico Impossibilities 2026

You are not wrong. The only southern option if you do not have an RABC is via Crane Lake, and that's not practical without the 50 mile Tow...with your own boat, a solo person is looking at $500 for that service. That said.... Northern entries are +2:45-3:45 over an Ely entry for the car...

    Solitude isn't for everyone

"Do you prefer tripping solo or with others?" Tough call. They are such different species of trips. I do one or two solos per year in NW Ontario. Maybe a hair more group trips over the past handful of years. I usually have a specific goal (get to a bushwhack lake that has not seen a human...

    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

Keep it coming! I was in Quetico at the same time in May '22 - water was at 500-year flood levels, or so they told me. Fully submerged portages with fast-moving water were common. Thank you for sharing.

    Maps... I like maps.

I too love maps and have a big map of Wabakimi behind my desk. Many years ago I met a guy (friend of a friend) who had a huge collection of old maps. By huge I mean tens of thousands from all over the world, mostly 1600s and 1700s. He built a stunning library for his collection and had a...

Does canoeing northern areas reduce the luster of the southern areas?

I had a similar experience in WCPP last year...it's addictive being the first person on a lake in 30, 50, 70+ years. Entire lakes of fish who have never seen a lure! Which means that even I have a chance to catch them...

    Wabakimi info

I've looked at this too - my suspicion is that if one showed up with a ticket, a canoe w/train fee paid, and had a dog...they would probably find a way to make it work for the short ride. But the penalty for being wrong is high. Would love to have a conversation with the Via Rail employee...

    Winter projects

Funny, I was just making a list. My DIY Portage pack now has about 10 trips and 70 days on it, and I need to make some repairs and one or two modifications to it. I have some outdoors clothing that similarly needs some repair. I may start tinkering with some carbon-fiber projects. Have...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

I agree. I suspect that (unfortunately) this case got lots of extra attention because one of the victims was a female gold-medalist olympian...a regular person & the perp might have not been prosecuted.

    Potentially promising canoe boots

Still looking for perfection, and have tried many. My priorities/requirements: Grip on wet rocks Drain well Dry fast No mesh, as that means sand and other small debris will need to be periodically emptied. Light weight Preference for mid-height vs regular shoe hight, however that's mostly about...

WCPP five years later than planned

Great route. Albert is a freaking treasure. Neat to see that you hit that side loop north of Bunny/NE of East Lunch. That's a cool area and it sees very very little traffic. You don't mention fishing but it is certainly world-class there. How was travel in/out of Cyclops? That one has a...

    Photo of the day

Very, very cool. So - as I understand it the 180 is not rated by the CAA for external loads (my best friend has a 180 with the King Katmai conversion)...were you using a PakCanoe? For me that's a real reason to own a PakCanoe (I don't...yet) as the Cessnas on floats are much cheaper to operate...

New Swift Tandem - Lavieille 17-6

Piling on to agree - this is not a tripping boat for three adults & gear, unless they are unusually small adults. Cottage boat? Sure. I've tripped in the larger 18' 9" Northstar Northwind with three people several times, and even though we were single-carrying & pretty light...the boat felt...
