I am so sorry for your loss 😢. I do know what it’s like.

Obvious safety violation: Say something or keep quiet?

And she probably wonders why everything happens her, or at least why she had such a terrible day.

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

The old classic “slipped on the ice” routine. We’d gotten a bunch of snow for a couple days, then it got up in the 40s the next day, then froze solid that night. That was the day I decided to go into town and run some errands. Hit a patch of practically invisible ice right outside the window of...

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

Well, my plans are all off. ALL off. No eclipse travel. No paddling. No skiing. No biking. No nothin’. Broke my wrist last week. 😭 Waiting to see whether I will need surgery, because it moved a little while splinted. I see the doctor again Tuesday, and hope to find out then whether I’ll just...

Any plans for the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse?

We’re going to Southern Indiana - Starve Hollow State Park. We have a little squaredrop camper, sort of a hard-sided tent on wheels. We may need to drive a little way from there to get to a 100% viewing area. Should be fun! Taking several days to hike and explore.

    Sanborn Paddle Quality

It is certainly prettier than a BB. My Java is pretty, but in a cookie-cutter, mass-production, sold in every paddling shop and big box store kind of way. I picture them being spit out of a big machine.

    Sanborn Paddle Quality

Not exactly sandpaper - more like the texture after the I’ve put the first coat of polyurethane on a piece of trim in my house, before the steel wool and final coat. Not smooth but not scratchy like sandpaper. More like raised grain, but this is where the wood is covered. So maybe tiny...

    Sanborn Paddle Quality

I say “gritty” for lack of a better word. It’s not exactly that. On that side it doesn’t feel like it’s the weave of the fabric, though. More like if you sanded it and then put another coat of finish on without thoroughly removing the dust/debris? Or maybe it’s tiny fibers from the fabric? Like...

    Sanborn Paddle Quality

Yes - that’s basically the one (there are two versions, but they look the same). Hard to get photos that show it well. On the wood face, it’s less visible unless the light is just right. Definitely feels like the surface is sort of gritty or something. Some of the other paddles looked...

    Sanborn Paddle Quality

Just wondering if anyone has noticed a decline in Sanborn’s attention to detail. I just bought a Nessmuk cedar paddle at Canoecopia. I’ve been wanting one, and the price was right. However, I am not impressed with the quality of the finish on it - and I did ransack through the ones of the...

    Canoe Cradle Stand

I saw the Suspendz ones at Canoecopia. They look good, but kinda pricey for what they are.

Video, of a guy tipping a canoe over in the middle of a Minnesota Lake

You can see the battery sitting on the floor, right behind the front seat. So at least it wasn’t behind him.

Wow. And then to advertise it to the world by posting videos 🤣. I’m no paddling genius, but this guy makes me look like one. Definitely bent shaft paddles - 2 of them, in fact.

    Now I’m in Deep

This reminds me of last summer, when I was scrambling to get off the river before the next torrential downpour hit. At the boat launch, while I was gathering my stuff for when hubby showed up with the truck, two girls from one of the liveries showed up to pick up some rental kayaks that were...

Stay safe in this big storm ...

That super wet snow is definitely easier to move after a day or two. It kinda drains out. When we get that heavy wet snowblower-chute-clogging stuff we wait, if we can. It can make a world of difference.

    Now I’m in Deep

As the wife in my particular household, I am uniquely qualified to advise you. I would suggest you break the news to her with a second Blacklite Northstar solo canoe. Its the only fair and equitable method. You‘re welcome! 😃

The best solo canoe may be a touring kayak.

I don’t find this discussion even slightly contentious- I was just amused at what passes for contention around here. All the rest of the internet is a cage fight in comparison! This is the kindest, most polite place around. And it makes perfect sense to mostly keep it about canoes. Thank you...

The best solo canoe may be a touring kayak.

My favorite aspect of this thread is the idea that it’s contentious 🤣. Have any of you ever been on any other forums? You guys are the best - kind and respectful at all times! My vote, currently, is for the canoe. I have 3 kayaks (12’, 14‘-6”, and 17’-7”) and now have 3 solo canoes (15’-4”...

The Effects of Keeping and Removing Dams

I’ve recently been reading comments on a Facebook page committed to keeping the dams on the AuSable, in lower Michigan. Homeowners and community members who are worried about their homes, wells, livelihoods, etc. It‘s a group of worried, upset people, for good reason. I’m trying to get a...
